Day 286

We are having the most beautiful winter weather right now. There may be frost on the ground and fog at the edges, but the days have been blue sky days. Being outside is very pleasurable.

This weekend has quite simply been spectacular. The best part is we are only half way through it!

Yesterday Darby got to spend a day with Nanny and Pop on his own. They spoiled him rotten by taking him to KFC (his favourite kind of junk) and then to watch The Karate Kid. I think they had secretly been waiting for a kid to bumble along so they could watch that flick. He has been doing kung fu ever since.

Tahlia had a day full of calisthenics and friendship. She had official calo rehearsals in the morning then unofficial duo practice with her bestie all afternoon.

Derek had the entire day at home alone where he pottered about, listed comics on E Bay and had an arvo nap.

And I was able to catch up with a long lost friend for a 4 hour lunch which was fantastic. It's been 4 years - the longest we've ever gone without seeing each other. Can you believe we've been friends for 30 years!!! Shit. You know your old when you can say that.

Why has it been 4 years? Quite simply because life happens. Sure, we don't live near each other, but hey, I've got a friend on the other side of the world I see more regularly than that. Surely 3 hours in a car isn't insurmountable.

Yep, life happens. Work, kids, family, projects. The reality is we just haven't made it a priority.

We made a decision yesterday to make it a priority. I mean, we don't have to be in each other's pockets, nor even in the general vicinity, but it would be nice to make face-to-face contact at least once a year. So here it is ... documented on the blogosphere ... you my friend are a priority.

So that has had me thinking of all my other friends who I haven't spoken to in such a long time. Don't get me wrong people, I don't ignore my peeps. Not at all. I have very close ties to my friends and would walk to the end of the Earth to be with them if/when they need me. I have heart friends from school, uni, work who are embedded in my soul. Friendships where we are very much a part of each others growth and where we helped shape each other. The type of friends that don't need constant contact to survive, but an "I'm thinking of you" from time to time wouldn't go astray. Friends that are forever friends no matter what ... where no judgements are made, or make up is needed .... just true friends that stand the test of time.

But that is the key. The test of time.

I declare this week to be "make contact with friends week". Just an email, a text or a phone call. Because for some it has been far to long between drinks ...
