Day 936

At the time of writing this post there are 89 days 22 hours and 50 minutes until the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

What does the Olympics mean to you?

When I was a kid I loved watching the Olympics on TV.  All of those sports, many of which I had never seen before.  I particularly loved the swimming, running, gymnastics and diving.  I remember one year a friend of mine came to stay and she stayed up ALL night watching the Games because she didn't have a television at home so she'd never ever seen the Olympics before. Never? Wow!

Of course we all remember having the Olympics in Sydney.  Where were you? Did you attend?

I was very proud that two of my aunties volunteered at the event.  One Auntie has actually given Tahlia her Sydney 2000 volunteers uniform as a keep sake.  Tahlia was turning one at the time and we had her birthday party on the day that Kieren Perkins and Grant Hackett battled it out in the 1500m swimming event.  Grant got the gold and Kieren got silver*. We had a TV outside next to the BBQ so that no one would miss it.  It was very emotional. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

Derek and I attended the Games.  I managed to get tickets  for the women's basketball quarter finals.  We watched Korea beat France (69 to 58) and the USA defeat Slovac Republic (58 to 43)*.  It was amazing being part of it all.  Just walking around the Olympic venue and absorbing that energy.

That's what the Olympic Games is for me. It's an energy.  It's a powerful energy made up of commitment, spirit, belief and a whole lot of action.  To make it to the Olympics is the ultimate success story.  It's a celebration of strength, courage and commitment.

Where will you be in 89 days, 22 hours and (now) 26 minutes?

Is there anyone out there who will actually be in London for the event?

What (if anything) does the Olympics mean to you?

PS What do you think of the mascots?

This is Mandelville and Wenlock. Love the jewelry. Especially the pink energy band. Not sure about the big ol' googly eye though. They remind me of something ...

*There is no way my memory is that good. Thank you Professor Google.
