Day 1027 - Red Rock Canyon

A drive to the Mojave Desert

A Deep Fried look at Red Rock Canyon

As we look out our hotel room we can see the Palazzo, Treasure Island and the Mirage to our left, the Trump hotel to our right, the Fashion Show Mall below us, and the jagged mountains and rock formations of the Mojave Desert on the horizon. Each morning we wake up to the sun reflecting on these incredible red hilly patches in the distance which looks less like real mountains and more like brush strokes on the canvass that is the sky.

After a week the curiosity was too great, so yesterday it was time to leave the bright lights of Vegas behind for a drive into the Mojave Desert.

Red Rock Canyon is a mere 40 minute drive from The Strip, with literally one single left hand turn and a straight road to get you there. We hired a car between two couples (costing us $80 for the day) and took the drive around mid morning.  Just travel north along Las Vegas Boulevard down past Circus Circus and turn left onto Charleston Boulevard.  Then all you have to do is drive, drive, drive until you see a big sign announcing Red Rock.  There will be a little right hand turn taking you into the National Conservation Area and for a fee of just $7 you're now in the painted hills of Nevada.

Once you get there you have two choices - you can do Red Rock by car, or you can get your hiking boots on and take to the trails. The trails have hike ratings ranging from easy, moderate and strenuous. On account of the heat (and the fact that we're lazy) we chose the scenic drive. We were not disappointed.  I'll let the photos tell the story*

Foot Notes:
*My amateur photography doesn't do this scenery justice.  If ever you get the opportunity to do Vegas, make sure you give yourself an extra half day to take this drive.  The added bonus is that you get to visit a few local shops along Charleston Boulevard which means getting groceries, alcohol, sun screen and even gifts at half the cost of what you'll pay on The Strip.  I highly recommend calling into the Whole Foods Market where you'll find a grocery store full of freshly made organic foods including a huge salad bar for a healthy lunch.  We bought a selection of dips, cheeses, clams and crackers for pre dinner drinks in our room last night.  All in all the $80 car hire fee was money well spent.
