Day 1039 - Australian Cheerleader Magazine

Keeping your mind open to opportunity

We're just a little bit excited that Charlie is now the face of the kid's page in the Australian Cheerleader Magazine.  After a year of talking about it, and lots of to'ing and fro'ing with puzzle pages and ideas, I've now got Charlie's Fun Page open in front of me.  Yet another example of how patient persistence, and keeping your eye open for opportunities, can pay off.

About two years ago a lady by the name of Rianna approached me at a cheerleading competition advising that she'd just set up a new squad in the ACT. At first I was a little wary because she was setting up in our immediate area and it meant my school squad had some competition.  Plus she actually looked like she knew what she was doing which further raised alarm bells (given I often haven't got a clue).  But then I remembered my philosophy of "let's create together rather than compete against" and a solid partnership was formed.  Not only is she now the squad I recommend my school kids go to once they finish primary school* (because they have similar values, a kick-arse facility and some of Australia's most experienced coaches) but she just also happened to be the editor of the Australian Cheerleader Magazine! Although that little pearl did not become apparent to me until at least six months after we met ...

Australian Cheerleader Magazine - Charlie's Fun Page
Getting Charlie into the magazine wasn't easy.  I had to prove Charlie's worth and credibility just like anyone else.  But it does go to show that networks are essential and that you've always got to be open to, and take advantage of, every opportunity.  You never know who the person you're chatting to actually is, and what doors they can help you open. It might be as simple as recommending a good dentist, or as big as getting you your next job.  But every single person has connections, and every single connection has possibilities.  As long as you are open to them.

Two years ago I could have brushed Rianna off.  I seem to recall I was feeling very unwell when she approached me (sinus infection at the Australian Cheerleading National Championships in Melbourne).  I could have felt threatened by her and chosen not to follow up on our casual suggestion of a coffee date.  I could have walked in the opposite direction or ignored her completely. But I didn't.  I was open to the opportunity.

Opportunity is everywhere.  You've just got to open your eyes ...

I wonder what opportunities await us today?!

*Tahlia now cheers with Rianna's squad (Sirens Cheerleaders) and I am now their Canberra Liaison.  One little conversation and a follow up coffee date certainly opened a few doors for our family.
