Day 1259 - Wanting to advertise on your blog?

Deep Fried Fruit is thinking about going commercial ....

After over three years of daily blogging it has come time for me to think about the future of this blog, particularly in regards to how it fits with the whole "Leanne Shea Langdown" business side of things.  The truth is that blogging can take up to an hour of my day which seriously impacts on the "author", "consultant" and "Mum" hats that I wear.   For blogging to be a viable addition to my day, perhaps it's time to charge for my services?

I've struggled with this decision for a long time.  My original purpose was to write.  I started blogging to awaken my creativity and to challenge me to come up with new ideas every single day.  It was also a way for me to celebrate the on-set of middle age and to help others embrace the aging process.  As I watch my reader numbers grow, I am thinking perhaps I might be fulfilling that purpose. In the past year I have gone from having 5,000 hits per month to 25,000 hits per month and it's climbing.

But as I try to grow my other business, I am finding that the blog is impacting greatly on my time.  At the moment I do not bring an income into the house.  Any money I make with Cheer Chick Charlie and the consultancy goes straight back into creating the Cheer Chick Charlie brand.  Of course this is putting a strain on my family. Blogging is putting a strain on my family. It will all be worth it in the end, but for now my purpose needs to be redefined.

In order to move forward, I have had to ask myself the following questions:

  • What do I have to offer companies?
  • What sets me apart from other writers?
  • What is my niche?
  • Are my stats strong enough?
  • What blogging highlights might attract people in?
  • What do I have to offer companies over and above my blog?
  • Will I need to increase my social media and make some Deep Fried Fruit specific?
  • How will I advertise without losing the integrity of my writing?
  • What type of advertising will I offer?
  • How much will I charge?
  • Who will I target?
  • How much extra time will monetizing my blog take?

Once the above questions were answered I had the basis for my Press Kit.  Luckily for me I have someone in my life who has some marketing experience and who believes in the potential for Deep Fried Fruit.  She has offered to be my Branding Consultant and will put in some of the extra work needed to take this blog commercial.  Already Chelsea has written up my spiel for the Press Kit and between us we have made it beautiful enough to start handing out to the PR reps.  We're almost ready to rock and roll.  I've even put an advertising space sign on my side bar.  It's about to happen ...

Deep Fried Fruit is thinking about going commercial because the time feels right.  We are testing the waters because the answers to the above questions are encouraging.  We've got our Press Kit tucked under our arm and we're about to start knocking on some doors.

Whether you agree with the whole money and blog thing or not, there's no denying blogging is already part of  business, and business is already part of blogging.  There's no time like the present to join the masses.

Speaking of which, Warner Bros have offered one of my readers, not one, but TWO new release DVD's.  Click here to enter the draw!

  1. I dont think there is anything wrong with advertising or getting sponsorship for your blog. It can become a business if you want it to be and with your dedication so far - who blogs every day? you do! Im sure it will work out great for you :D Good luck

  2. Well done! I've done the same thing although my writing is more for me as a crativ eoitlet at the moment, but I've created a commercial side to my humble site. It's still in testing phase but I thought if I don't launch soon then ... I can't offer any advice yet as its all so new and u get way more readers than I but one thing I do know as a journo is be very clear who yr audience is and stick to it - that will always help you maintain yr image, brand and focus. look forward to reading more xx
