Day 1659 - Freeways

Today I am grateful for freeways.

As we start our journey south I would like to pay homage to freeways.  I forget how spoiled we are in the ACT with a now finished freeway to Melbourne and a well established freeway system to Sydney, Newcastle and beyond.  It shocks me when we head elsewhere to discover that as far as Aussie freeways are concerned, they're relatively few and far between.  From Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour (for example) the roads are slow and dangerous.  Sure, they are starting to build better roads in that direction but it's already been years in the making and I'm getting a little impatient. As for Brisbane ... actually Noosa .... to Gladstone there is no such thing as a freeway and we're back to the two way single lane "highways" of thirty years ago.

Sure, these smaller roads bring with them the delight of small towns and wondrous scenery, but when you're not out for a Sunday drive the slow, winding sight seeing can bring with it impatience and fatigue.  Add to that the increase in trucks (many with double trailers) and things don't feel overly safe out here.

As I sit here in the passenger seat on a slow and busy single lane leg of the Bruce Highway, I am wondering, are we lagging in the whole national freeway system game?

How important are roads in your mind?

Do you have good roads around your area?

  2. As a Queenslander, I can't believe how vulnerable our number one highway is to flooding in this day and age. It's not good enough!
