Day 1732 - Canberra Times

Any publicity is good publicity, right?

A snip from the Canberra Times article of today
I am always nervous doing interviews for print.  Mainly because the words you say can be misquoted or used out of context.  I had a fantastic conversation with the author of this article on Thursday as he raced to reach his deadline of 5pm that day.  He was a really cool guy.  He rang me in my role as "life coach" wanting to chat about the uncertainty many public servants face as jobs are axed over the next 6-12 months.  I was so careful with my words and tried really hard to ensure anything I said would make sense in any context.  Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Our conversation ended up completely steering away from the plight of the public service and towards cheerleading.  Not sure how we managed that.  I guess we just got carried away with the "chat" and forgot about the interview. I have a habit of doing that ...

I would have loved to have had a bigger chunk of our conversation appear in this article just so my words make more sense.  As they are I seem to come across a little "harsh" and a tad "cold". Flippant is probably the word. I sound flippant.  And odd.  Oh well ...  I guess there is only so much space in newspaper columns.  I get that.

What we had talked about at length was the fact that so many of us are defined by our work. So when the work place changes, or we lose our jobs, our worth is put into question.  Particularly if our self value is equal to a pay scale, a title, workplace perks etc. When we leave that environment, we may no longer feel as valued or as valuable. But we must remember that our work is not the sum total of our worth.  We have so much to offer this world, it's just a matter of finding all of the opportunities and being open to the possibilities.

I guess my biggest fear with this article is that my words don't quite sound the way I had hoped they would ... but hey ... any publicity is good publicity, right? Please say yes ...

  1. I thought the article was well written and positive!
I don't think you sound flippant. Your quotes defined what you do and what you believe in.

    Great exposure.
