Day 2067 - Hand luggage for overseas travel

Ever wonder what to take on a long haul flight?

Well, wonder no more.  I've got this travelling gig well in hand.

Here's what goes inside the Deep Fried carry-on suitcase:
  • Handbag: A small handbag that can fit neatly inside the carry-on with all the essentials like my wallet, sunnies, camera, mints, phone and passport.
  • Beauty products:  In order to feel fabulous when I get off at the other end I always take some basic makeup inside a plastic zip lock bag to ensure it falls in line with international travel regulations when it comes to carrying liquid.
  • Underwear, socks and slippers: I pack a spare pair of undies in case my suitcase goes on it's own adventure and doesn't make it to the destination at the same time we do.  I also like to take flight socks and a pair of cheap slippers for walking to the toilet (don't want to step in pee in my socks plus it's a pain to have to always put my shoes back on).
  •  Charger:  I never know if I'm going to be delayed so I pack my charger in the event that my phone dies before I meet up with my suitcases again.
  • Toothbrush:  Having a toothbrush and an iddy biddy tube of toothpaste definitely helps to freshen up after a long haul flight.
  • Hat:  Because I don't like to stuff my hat in my suitcase I tend to carry it on board with me and place it gently in the storage bins above. It's also handy to have when we disembark in a hot hot HOT climate.
  • Travel documents: I take my itineraries, ETickets, accommodation booking, visa details, hotel address, contact details etc in case there are any problems.  I also take a pen for filling out those pesky customs forms.
  • Business promo:  I never know who I might meet when travelling, so I like to take some of my Cheer Chick Charlie promotional material with me just in case I can do a bit of networking en route.
  • Neck pillow:  Important! If I want any chance of catching some Z's I need a supportive neck pillow.  Mine is velvety and plush and has a loop so that I can hang it off my carry-on bag.
  • Good book: Great for on board and waiting at airports. Also good for when I have to sit by the pool on arrival because my room's not ready yet.
  • Swimmers: See point above.  If I've got a spare corner in my carry-on then I'll often throw in my swimsuit just in case I need to fill in time while waiting for a room on arrival.

What to wear on board when going from cold to hot:

When going from the sub-zero temperatures of an ACT winter to the desert temps of a Vegas summer, it's definitely all about the layers.

I start off with a basic white jean and add a t-shirt, plus a long sleeved t-shirt, a jacket and a scarf, along with covered in shoes.

While it's tempting to dress for complete comfort (leggings or trackies) I have found that dressing for any eventuality is best.

You never know how long you'll be waiting around for your room to be ready and there is always the chance your suitcase has gone on a magical mystery tour.  So I dress in a way that combines comfort with a smart/casual attire just in case I'm required to look like someone worth networking with.  Plus you never know when you might get offered an upgrade!

I make sure I leave room in my carry-on so that I can pack away my jacket, scarf and long sleeve tee when I get to the other end.

So there you have it.

That's my Deep Fried approach to carry-on luggage for a long haul flight.

What do you take on board flights?

Any tips for long haul travel?

Gotta dash. I've got some Vegas to explore.

Ciao!

  5. Ok everyone, you're not going to believe this. I jinxed myself with my pre written scheduled post. My suitcase has gone missing!! Lucky I chose to wear half decent clothes because I'm currently walking the strip in my flight gear. Clearly the powers that be read my post. L
