Day 2126 - Food for your eyes

Are carrots really good for your eyes?

You know the joke. It goes something like:

I heard carrots are good for your eyes.
They must be, have you ever seen a rabbit wearing glasses?

It turns out that it ain't no joke.

Carrots ARE good for your eyes.  According to Rebecca Taylor MD, spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Redbook Magazine August 2015) carrots contain vitamin A which helps the retina function properly.

Carrots aren't the only source of optical goodness.  Leafy greens are also important to help fight macular degeneration.  Veges like spinach, kale and broccoli are particularly good.

Other foods include fish high in omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon and tuna) which helps fight dry eyes, as well as citrus fruits which helps with retina health.

Combine carrots with all that leafy goodness and it's no wonder rabbits don't wear glasses.

Nor do fish for that matter.
