Day 2230 - Is Sugar ever a good thing?

Sometimes sugar can be the smarter choice.

According to a study at the University of Michigan, the latest research suggests that sugar may well be better than artificial sweeteners when it comes to weight loss.

Foods that say 'sugar-free' or 'low-calorie' are often filled with artificial sweeteners which can actually cause us to over indulge.



You see, real sugar is broken down during digestion and it triggers sensors in our brain that tell us we're full.

Artificial sweeteners on the other hand are not metabolized so they can't satisfy our body's energy needs.

So if we're craving a sweet fix, the real stuff could well be better for us!  In small doses of course.



I personally don't eat anything with artificial sweeteners.  Simply because I don't like chemicals in my body, plus I think it may contribute to migraines AND I've read too much stuff about its links to cancer.  The book "Skinny Bitch" by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin certainly scared me enough to never have Diet Coke in my house.  

So real fair dinkum sugar is my sweetener of choice.

However, I wonder what foods and drink might be out there with the artificial stuff that I may not be aware of?

Is the artificial stuff as bad as some people say?

  1. I'm with you Leanne. It seems everything goes through stages of being "good" or "bad" for us ... whatevs. Hubster comes from a family of cane farmers so we have a more personal reason for sticking to sugar!!!

  2. We have sugar free soft drink in our house because my husband is diabetic. Because our tastes have changed due to that, I actually can't do regular soft drink any more. Generally speaking, however, I agree. Just eat the appropriate amounts of "bad" things and you're ok (when you don't have a related medical condition).
