Back 15 years ago when I was cleansing (due to food sensitivities) pears were the only fruit I could eat for months. Perhaps I got my fill or something. Anyway, I don't tend to eat pears.
But maybe I should.
As with most clean green foods the pear has a bunch of health benefits.
According to Prevention Magazine (Feb/Mar 2016) pears provide 11% of our daily vitamin C needs along with 9% of our daily copper requirements. Which means they act as antioxidants to protect us against those damned free radicals that do bad things like make us look older and give us cancer and stuff.
So that's all good I guess.
But that's not why I'm writing about pears. There's more ...
The big news is that pears can help beat a hangover! Yup! According to studies conducted at the CSIRO it turns out that pears can help speed up how we metabolise alcohol. BUT (there are always "buts" in life) it only works if you eat the pears before you start drinking.
Isn't that interesting?
I wonder if it works WHILE you're drinking?
Pear martini anyone?
What's your favourite fruit?
Do you have pears at your house?
Anyone have any good pear juice cocktail recipes?
PS I found some pear juice cocktail recipes here.

For all my blogger friends out there I have taken a huge bloggy step and decided to have a linky party at my joint. I've been thinking about it for two years and done nothing about it. So given my word(s) of the year are "Onward and Upward" I decided it was time.
It's possible you've already had your fill of linkies. But if not, the Lovin' Life Linky will go live this coming Sunday at 8.30am (because it's Sunday and that deserves a sleep in). You can read about it here, but basically it's just about sharing the stuff that makes us happy.
Hope you can join me. Cause there really is a lot to love about life ...
I have pears nearly every morning on my cereal. Love them. Handy to know about the hangover cure, although I rarely drink directly after breakfast! ;-)
ReplyDeleteLOL. That's good to hear!
DeleteWow! This will be huge for the reputation of the humble pear. Talk about giving them instant street cred. The kids love pears, but I'm a little meh about them. Great idea for the linky. I will join in when I can although I tend to only do one post a week.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little meh about pears too. Find them a little bland ...
DeleteI pear martini, now that sounds interesting. I don't eat them of Arno real reason but one of my kids told the teacher when they were in kinder that pears were my favourite food. hmm not sure how that happened.
ReplyDeleteOut of the mouths of babes ...
DeleteI love pears. And I love that you're doing a linky...I will see what I can rustle up...maybe I'll write about pears. ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL. Yep! Write about pears. That would be perfect.
DeleteTho tweet me a reminder if I forget. I'm like that at the moment.
ReplyDeleteYou're good at tweeting though. Me, not so much. But I will definitely tweet you a reminder.
DeleteI really enjoy tinned pears but I find the real thing a bit ugly and messy and therefore I avoid them. Sad but true. My kids like them though!
ReplyDeleteThey are kind of drippy ... I agree.
DeleteThere you go, pear canapés before cocktails, eh? And a new linky! I tend to write once or twice a week so will pop by to link up one of my posts :)
ReplyDeleteYou're a keeper Amy! That would be awesome.
DeleteCongrats on the new linky!!
ReplyDeleteI like a pear maybe once a year. I don't know, maybe they're an easy fruit to get your fill of!
Thanks Vanessa. Yes, pears really are the plain Jane of the fruit world.
DeleteI'm not a big fan of pears since one went rotten and squishy in my school bag once. Haven't eaten one since!
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats on the linky!
I can understand that!
DeletePears are not my favourite fruit. What puts me off them is I seem to have to wait for ages for them to ripen enough to eat them and then I often miss the "ripe for eating" window and they go over-ripe and mushy and I throw them out.
ReplyDeleteRe your linky, is it mainly for personal bloggers? Would it be okay to join up with my beauty posts? I don't want to link up posts that you think are not appropriate for your linky :)
Totally for all bloggers! It's just about what you're lovin' that week. Whether it be make-up, kid things, clothes, food, a coffee shop ... just lovin' life generally really.
DeleteI've never really liked the taste of pears on their own, but I do like them in a salad with feta/parmesan and rocket. I didn't know pears were that good for you. Thank you for that interesting fact.
ReplyDeleteThat salad sounds awesome!
DeleteLove a nice William Bartlett Pear - they remind me of my grandmother. When I was a little girl it seemed she always had them in her fruit bowl for us to eat - of course now I think that can't have been possible because they're only in season for a short time of the year!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from #teamIBOT x
Yeah ... pears have a fairly limited life span I think. Strawberries remind me of my grandmother. She always seemed to have them growing around the edges of her flower gardens.
DeleteI don't buy pears but every time I eat one I wonder why on earth I don't because they are so refreshing. They have to be the perfect mushiness though so maybe that is why I don't buy them more.
ReplyDeleteI think you've got to get them when they're just right. I always buy them too hard. They don't taste very good when you get them too early, that's for sure!
DeleteI have never heard that about pears! How fascinating. And it's always good to learn about a new linky. I don't always have time to link (or, more honestly, to read and comment) but I will certainly keep an eye on your new project :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Lara!
DeleteI really like pears, most of the time I eat as natural fruit. Thanks for these tips & helpful article.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Amila. Come back anytime!
