Day 2336 - The Black Opal Stakes Race Day

It's Canberra Festival Time

Watching the horses cross the line from the Members Stand at Thoroughbred Park in Canberra
The Black Opal race day.
March is just one big party in the ACT as we celebrate Canberra's birthday.  One of the first activities on the March calendar is the Black Opal race day.

The Black Opal Stakes is Canberra's premier race day. It's usually held on the first Sunday of March and includes around 8 local races with up to $275,000 per race in prize money.

Whether you're into horse racing or not, the Black Opal has activities for the entire family including the Myer Fashions on the Field, live music, face painting, a jumping castle and various dining options including marquees, the Members Stand and The Food Alley.

The Black Opal race day is held at Thoroughbred Park in north Canberra.  Gates open around 11.30am with local races usually starting around 1.00pm.  The Black Opal Stakes is run around 5.00pm.

Parking is available for $5 a car and there is a bus stop nearby.

For more information head to www.thoroughbredpark.com.au.

The Black Opal race day draws quite a crowd

There's a public grandstand as well as the Member's Stand to choose from.

The Myer Fashion on the Field is a fan favourite with the focus on classic race wear.

There are shaded areas to hang out between races

You can bet with the bookies or via ACTAB

The Black Opal is as casual or as dressy as you'd like it to be.
For us it's a great excuse to get our gear on.
I do love a good fascinator!

So if you're planning a trip to the ACT in March, be sure to put The Black Opal Stakes on your agenda!

This post forms part of my Showcasing Canberra series.
