It's that time of year again!
It's time for the ACT Regional Cheerleading competition which brings all the ACT and regional competition squads together to not only show off their rad cheer skills (can you believe I just used the word "rad"?) but to also raise money for skilling our athletes and coaches, PLUS donating to local charities.
This year we're supporting Ronald McDonald House Canberra and Cerebral Palsy Alliance.
I love being involved in this event. Even though I don't have a cheer squad anymore, nor do I coach, I still volunteer my time to project management this event because it's such a great group of people to be involved with.
How many sports do you know of where all the competing teams come together in a friendly and cooperative environment to raise money for their sport?
How many businesses do you know of that are in direct competition yet work together to create an energy in their industry that surpasses the financial gain?
There are now eleven competition cheerleading teams in the ACT region and all eleven have a role to play in tomorrow's competition. Each squad has volunteered to take charge of an element of the event to ensure the competition runs safely and smoothly.
Roles include providing the safety flooring, the transport truck, the cake stall, tables and chairs, ordering the trophies, ordering the wristbands, providing an emcee, organising social media, liaising with vendors, manning the registration desk, marshaling the athletes. liaising with the judges, scribing for the judges, organising the venue, organising the DJ ... the list goes on.
It's a not-for-profit event that relies heavily on all teams working together for the good of our sport.
The competition continues to grow with two new teams visiting us from outside the ACT.
Each year the ACT Regional squads are wholeheartedly and enthusiastically helping to make this event happen.
So why do I continue to be involved when I no longer have a squad?
Because it's a great energy to be around. I'm not ready to walk away from it just yet.
The ACT Regional Cheerleading Competition is on at Southern Cross Basketball Stadium Tuggeranong tomorrow, Sunday 14 August, from 8.00am to 6.00pm. Doors are open to spectators from 7.30am with $10 entry fee for 16+ and under 16's a gold coin donation.
