For those of you playing along at home, I finally went to the doc today.
After having a particularly loooooong and painful winter I headed to my ridiculously good looking doctor to see what options I might have with the management of my fibromyalgia pain.
My recent reliance on pain meds and muscle relaxants is obviously of concern. Popping painkillers may be an attractive option for some, but for me I prefer to be of clear head and drug free.
The first thing I requested was more tests to eliminate a few other nasty beasts like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, bone cancer etc so that we are better equipped to agree on the fibro diagnosis.
Step one is a blood test and step two is a "nuclear medicine" whole body scan to check on any potential hot spots in my body.
I won't know the results of these for at least three weeks.
The reality is, once we've agreed that the pain is caused by fibromyalgia, I'll need to consult a pain management clinic.
There is no cure. So it will be up to me to spend the next 40 odd years managing my pain through diet, exercise, mindset and alternative therapies.
I will focus on the positivity of hopefully having another 40 odd years of life rather than the idea of having to spend them in pain.
Taking control of our own health is essential to this ageing positively gig. We may not be able to choose our medical challenges but we can choose how we handle them.
It is, what it is.
We've just got to be the best we can be within the diagnosis.
I'll keep you posted!
