Day 2832 - Getting up close and personal with the animals at Australia Zoo

Have you been to Australia Zoo?

A visit to Australia Zoo is a must for anyone travelling to the Sunshine Coast area of Queensland.  Especially if you have children.

We've done it a few times over the last 10 years and it's wonderful to see its growth and the conservation advances each time we visit.

What I noticed about our most recent trip is the ability to get up close and personal with some of the animals for little to no additional cost.

Patting a wombat as it takes a stroll through the zoo - free

Riding a camel - $15 plus $5 if you would like a professional photo

Having a quick pat of a koala at certain times of the day - free

Feeding the kangaroos as you walk through the kangaroo areas - $2 a bag

Getting to pat and have your photo taken with a tortoise - $10 per group which includes professional photo

The petting zoo - free

Animal encounters vary in price and availability.

If you check the zoo schedule you can easily come across animals as they are being walked through the park.  Wombats and dingoes can be experienced in this way.

To get up close to a koala for a quick pat and a chat simply be at the koala section between the kangaroo enclosure and "Asia" at the right time and get in line.

The tortoise encounter was made available to us after the 10.00am tortoise talk.  For only $10 per person/group (regardless of how many people) we got to spend a few minutes with the tortoise and have our photo taken.  There were no strings attached with the photo either. We received a good sized professional photo as part of our $10 donation.  All money raised from the encounter goes directly to the conservation of these amazing animals.

The tortoise encounter was opportunistic with no pre-planning required.  It was quick and directed at getting as many groups through as possible.

There are, however, a bunch of other reasonably priced encounters available for individuals who would like to spend some quality one-on-one time:

  • Lemurs
  • Otters
  • Cheetah
  • Rhino
  • Tiger
  • Dingo
  • Koala cuddles
  • Birds of prey
  • Echidnas
  • Giraffes

  1. I haven't been there for maybe a decade or more. It wasn't impressive at the time, though to be fair to them they were doing a LOT of construction at the time so I think that impacted my enjoyment of the place.

  2. We went to Australia Zoo last year when we had a visitor from the UK staying with us. I did a blog post about it - though it's mostly just photos: http://www.writeofthemiddle.com/australia-zoo/ Loved it but was exhausted after the day! Enjoy your time at Noosa! :-) xo

  3. We went last year when we had people from NZ staying with us - it was the first time I'd been since I was a child, even though it's only an hour or two's drive for me! I was thrilled to cuddle a koala - and have the photo to prove it. I'd love to go back again.
