Day 2860 - Wellness Wednesday - Steptember

How many steps can you do in a day?



As you know I have a Fit Bit and I have found it really is holding me more accountable for my exercise each day (both the targeted exercise and incidental steps).

I only have my goal set at 8000 steps because I sit at my desk all day and find it difficult to make time for extra walking.  So while the 8000 is still a push, it's more achievable for me right now.

But I'd really like to get to the recommended 10,000.



You may recall I used to walk 5km every day at dawn.  Even in the dead of winter where the overnight temps in Canberra get to minus 8 and the fog is so thick you can't see a metre in front of you.

Notice I said "used to".

The older I get, the more the cold impacts on my fibro body.  So it hasn't happened this winter at all.

I still try to get one or two good walks in a week, but gone are the weeks I would easily rack up 25k.

Anyway, this is a very long way of me saying that I'd like to get back into walking now that spring is approaching and I would like to increase my Fit Bit target to 10,000 steps.

Enter - STEPTEMBER.

I jointly project managed a big cheerleading competition last weekend where we raised money for Ronald McDonald House and Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

As I was researching Cerebral Palsy fundraising I came across "Steptember" which encourages people to walk 10,000 steps a day for 28 days straight during September to raise money for cerebral palsy.

They encourage us to register teams of 4 people and find as many ways as possible to achieve 10,000 steps a day from 4 September to 1 October.  Then get sponsored for our efforts.  They even send out pedometers to help track our progress.

Every dollar raised will provide vital equipment, therapy and services to children and adults living with cerebral palsy.  OR we can choose to raise funds for groundbreaking research into the prevention and maybe a cure for CP.

I'm thinking this may well be the kick in the butt I need to get my fitness back to where it used to be and contribute to charity in the process.

  1. Good for you - according to my phone I average 7ooo steps, and only one day this week did 10k. However my phone doesn't exercise with me cos currently I'm doing that inside....If I'm doing 7k when I'm barely walking anywhere, then I think you could do 10k.

  2. What a great idea! After recurrent ear infections have stopped me doing aqua aerobics for a while, i have started a morning walk. I still only manage about 3000 steps per day (the joys of working from home) but figure it's better than what I *was* doing - which was nothing!
