Day 3002 - Wellness Strategy

Mind, Body, Soul

By now you know my word for the year is "light".  An odd choice I know, but once you read my post about how I came up with it, it makes perfect sense.

One goal for 2018 is to feel "lighter" in mind, body and soul.  Even as I type this I'm feeling heavy, lacking energy and have limited enthusiasm.  I want to change that.  It's time to get back to bouncing out of bed each day.

So I've created a wellness strategy to help get this show on the road.

For the next 4-6 weeks I'll be documenting my exercise, food, mindset and general activity in a spreadsheet to become more accountable for the choices I make each day.

It seems like overkill I know (believe me, I'm tired just thinking about having to open the bloody Excel document) but given how "heavy" I've been feeling I think the end justifies the means. I want to get back to making wiser choices that better serve me in all areas of my life.  I don't want the sheer thought of life to make me tired.

I want to get back to feeling "light".

What does my wellness strategy look like?

My spreadsheet is broken into three categories:
  • Toning and Fitness
  • Health and Diet
  • Mind and Soul
Toning and Fitness is about getting my body back into good shape and includes distance covered (in kms), toning, flex, cardio, gym work and steps according to FitBit.  It's all about the exercise and holding myself accountable for just how much (or how little) I'm doing.  I let it slide last year and it's not easy getting back into it, but it feels good when I see progress in writing.

Health and Diet looks at what I'm choosing to fuel my body with and is broken into details about my daily menu, the antioxidant content I'm including, how much water I'm drinking, my green tea intake and any supplements I'm adding.  I include antioxidants for the whole "avoiding cancer" thing and add the green tea because in the past I have found it has helped me with weight loss.

Mind and Soul covers personal development, growth mindset, networking, friendship, family, marriage, motherhood, household organisation, relaxation and me time, and the amount of sleep I have each night.  Notice it doesn't include "work" as such, because my wellness plan is about my personal life as it is right now in the summer holidays.  I do include business in my PD, growth mindset and networking categories though.

Today is Day (5) and I still have a long way to go.   But by jotting it all down and really seeing what I'm doing, holding myself accountable for my actions (or lack thereof) and noting the gaps, I'm back into being mindful about my wellness.

They say it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Taking the time to create a daily record helps to embed it into the brain to create a new habit of mindful well being.

It's early days yet, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Anyone else looking to feel lighter this year?

What are your mind, body, soul goals?

Any tips for me with my wellness strategy?

Feel free to visit the blog each Wednesday for my Wellness Wednesday Quick Tip where each week I'll share quick and easy wellness facts found in my own wellness research. PLUS there will be guest bloggers.

  1. Much as I'd love to adopt a similar strategy I have way too much going on in so many other areas of my life right now that I need to deal with. I might however start something similar in three months time however when things should have calmed down and resolved as I would love to feel 'lighter' in all sense of the word too!

  2. I am not spreadsheeting it but am on a mission to get back to running 10km (did the bridge to Brisbane in 2014 and the. Never ran consistently again) and lose 20 more pounds (lost 10 in the 4th quarter of 2017). So far doing daily yoga challenge, running 5km twice a week (just did run 1 of week 2) this month, and just started back at the gym yesterday (3 classes a week). Food wise my number one aim is to increase my poor vegetable intake and crowd out other foods/ have healthy snacks.

Good luck and I will be cheering you on.

  3. I love having this month off (teacher holidays!) because I can spend some time looking after myself before the year begins. For my body, I've been doing Zumba. For my soul, lots of Bible reading and reflection. And for my mind, writing for my blog and reading. It feels great to have a balance of all three :)

  4. Good luck with your strategy in 2018! I hope it reaps all the benefits you are looking for. :)

  5. You are so organised! I'm tracking my food and my exercise the old fashioned way, by hand! I am striving for 10,000 a steps every day but if I don't hit the target I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Talking of sleep, I'm making an effort to go to bed earlier and have some reading time before I hit Sleepy Town. Hope 2018 is a year full of fit and fabulous!

  6. I can only commend you for 'giving all of this a go'. Leanne, the emotional toll on you last year will have taken so much from your reserves. You are the one who holds her family together and you had so many threads to hold and not let go that it is no wonder you feel so lethargic. My view, and it is only my view, is that you need to be so much kinder to yourself and if that means doing all you have via the spreadsheet so be it...but if there are also some times where you nurture yourself as much as you do others, I hope you can find that time too. Sending hugs of understanding! Denyse xx

  7. Good on you for starting as you mean to go on and holding yourself accountable. I’m still figuring out how to get exercise into my routine. Actually, to be honest, I’m probably avoiding routine and trying to pretend it’s still holidays.

I love hearing your thoughts! Keep them rolling in :)
