Day 3095 - The Cartier Exhibition - National Gallery of Australia - Canberra

Shine bright like a diamond.

We all deserve some bling in our life, don't we?

"The 20th Century saw the House of Cartier become the world's most prestigious designer of jewellery, luxury accessories and timepieces."

Yesterday the big grown up (step) daughter, the teen and I headed to the National Gallery of Australia for a girls morning at the Cartier Exhibit.

To be honest I was expecting a one room show with a few diamonds on display inside glass boxes bolted to the ground.

Instead we found a gallery full of jewels of all colours, sizes and settings dating from the early 1900s right through to today, displayed in many different formats with photos, back stories, clothing and accessories.

We even went on a "tour" into yester-year where they show us how the jewellery was made from the design and mould phase, through the cutting and polishing of the stones, right through to the final product.

The displays are incredible with more sparkles than an LA red carpet event or a ball at Windsor Palace.

There are paintings of the jewellery being worn, photographs of their advertising campaigns, pictures of current stars on the red carpet, royalty, pages out of the original black and white Cartier catalogues and exquisite pieces of bling in all colours and styles in beautifully lit cabinets for front and back viewing.

"Cartier's glittering international customers included royalty and aristocracy, socialites, business leaders, financiers and industrialists, and stars of the stage and screen."

Our morning was filled with a seemingly never ending array of sparkles transporting us into a world of riches beyond our wildest dreams.

Then it unceremoniously dumped us into the NGA shop and brought us back to reality where we couldn't even afford to buy the coffee table book, let alone any of the incredible pieces photographed inside it. (Actually, I jest. At $50 the book was fairly reasonable.)

If you are even remotely attracted to shiny things, fashion, accessories, fine craftsmanship or the world of glamour, I would recommend a visit to the National Gallery of Australia while the Cartier Exhibit is on. We had a fabulous morning and it was a great idea for a girls day out.

The Cartier Exhibition runs through to 22 July 2018 and costs around $25-$30 a ticket.

  2. My MIL is visiting Canberra this weekend specifically to see this exhibition.

I do love bling but I don't know I'll be able to fit a visit there in myself although I am tempted! I love learning the history of various pieces of jewelry, how they were designed and made, and seeing who wore them when etc.

  5. Darn, wish it had been on when I was in Canberra in January! I've been to a couple of awesome exhibitions here in Brisbane over the last few years - a Valentino one at GOMA, and costumes from the Golden Age of Hollywood at the Museum of Brisbane, both absolutely amazing.
