Day 3115 - Wellness Wednesday Quick Tip #12 - The importance of having something to look forward to

Do you have something to look forward to?

According to Elvis, the key to happiness is having "someone to love, something to do and something to look forward to."

The "something to look forward" to element is extremely important in life.  Just yesterday we booked a 6 day getaway for the family in July because having that holiday on the horizon is so important when breaking up the habitual monotony we can find ourselves in.

A healthy sense of anticipation can help to energise us which in turn helps us get through tough times.  Sure, it's important to live in the present and immerse ourselves in the power of "now" but when "now" feels dark, frustrating or boring, having something to look forward to can give us the motivation and boost we need to keep our minds positive.

So when you're planning your next few months make sure you throw in a few key activities, some adventures and a get-away to give you a burst of sunshine on your horizon.  A fun future not only helps you get through today, but it will give a bunch of great memories for your yesterday.

  1. Hi Leanne, it is so important to have something to look forward to. We need a purpose in life and planning things is part of that. We shouldn't live in the past or future but I love the excitement I feel when I have something special to look forward to. Love your Wellness Wednesday and I think next week is the link up. Thanks for sharing at Midlife Share the Love Party and have a great week!

  2. I agree Leanne. It's easy to slip into a rut, and blindly go from one routine thing to the other slipping into a comfort zone with a nonchalent but slightly antsy frame of mind. Planning is not something I love to do, but when I have things in place I really love doing them. Great reminder to plans some short trips for the remainder of the year.

  3. Ahhh yes I couldn't agree more Leanne. I need to book a holiday to have that 'something' to look forward to. It makes all the difference to our mindset!

  4. Yes something to look forward to is so important in life otherwise as you say we get stuck in a rut and wonder what it's all about. Right now I am looking forward to the last of our furniture arriving so we can get the boxes unpacked which are currently sitting in our living room ;-)

  6. Oh yes, Leanne. I love this. I am looking forward to tackling my next book (with one launching in a couple of months, it's time to get onto the next one.) I'd love you to select one of these posts from the complete list of Improve your Life, Improve your Mind posts and leave a comment.#atoz

  7. We say in our family that anticipation is often better than the event itself - so you're right about it being good to have things to look forward to. Now I just have to come up with something!

Thanks for linking up with us at #MLSTL and I've shared this on my SM xx

  8. Absolutely true! If more folks realized this & put it into action the world would be a better place. Just joined the Midlife Party. I am newly retired for about a year & this is even more important now. Love your blog name. Travel seems to be the thing I most like to plan then have time to anticipate.

  9. If I am not careful I live too much in the future. I am always planning sometimes planning when I am doing what I planned. lol I need to slow down and live in the moment.

  10. I love having things to look forward to, but I have to be careful not too spend too much time thinking about tomorrow. I am working hard to focus on everyday fun things too.

  11. Hey Leanne! Very inspiring! Indeed, we must have things to look forward to. Special things that make us happier than the day-to-day. Now that the weather is warmer, I'm planning some special outings with friends and my two pups. Keep on smiling!

  12. This is great advice Leanne - much needed in a month where teachers like me tear out their hair trying to get things done and don't even have time to book that holiday. Something I should've done in March so that I could look forward to it now. But honestly - the looking forward to shouldn't also be too far away in the distance.

  13. I agree Leanne! I try to have some small fun thing on the calendar for each week and a get-away at least twice a year. Once we finish one trip, we start the planning for the next. Of course, it's important to do something you enjoy each day as well, but the anticipation of an upcoming event stretches out the joy, and as you noted, you then have the memories after. Have a lovely day! I found your post on the #MLSTL linkup.
