Day 3185 - Wellness Wednesday - The wonder of walnuts

Go nuts for walnuts!

According to a recent study by the University of Illinois, walnuts are touted as playing a role in heart health and have even been flagged as potentially reducing colorectal cancer.  This latter finding is likely attributed to the positive impact walnuts have on the gut microbiome.

Walnuts are also quite well respected for the positive effect they have on our skin health.  You'll recall they made it to the top 8 "skin superfoods" list on my blog back in 2016. They can help reduce acne due to their anti-inflammatory properties.

Walnuts (as with all nuts) contain good fats and they are a good source of the essential fatty acid omega-3.  They also contain selenium, zinc, iron, calcium, vitamin E and some B vitamins.  Apparently they also contain some rare and powerful antioxidants which are important to fight those pesky free radicals and for any couples out there trying to fall pregnant, they are found to improve reproductive health in men.

How many should we eat? Well, after a bit of research on the inter-webs I found that the general consensus was around 7.  Eating too many can cause weight gain and if people have food sensitivities or allergies, they can have certain side effects.

Reminder: I am not a nutritionist nor a dietitian, just an avid reader and web researcher.  As always, consult your health care professional.

  1. Hi Leanne! I'm not really a walnut fan but I didn't realize the benefits from eating them. Thanks for the info! :)

  2. Oh, how I love nuts. Peanuts in particular but there isn't a nut I will turn down. Glad to know eating walnuts - at least in moderation- is good for me!
