Day 3204 - If I could ....

If I could, I would ...

If I could paint, I'd paint a portrait of you ....

Such great lyrics and if you're a teenager of the 80s then you'll pretty much know this song by heart.  The hubby and I have been watching a bit of music TV via Music Max on Foxtel and reliving some of the great songs of yesteryear.  This one came up recently and it got me to thinking about the whole "If I could" line of thought.

The song goes a little something like this:

If I could paint, I'd paint a portrait of you, dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah

If I could write, I'd write a book for you, dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah

If I could play, I'd play up a storm for you, dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah

Those dah dah dahs are actual words, which have escaped me right now. So perhaps I don't remember the song as well as I thought I did. But you get the drift.

As I was singing along to the song (OK, let's call it humming) I started wondering why this bloke didn't just bloody well have a go at the stuff he was singing about.  Paint the darn portrait, write the bloody book and get outside and play for goodness sake.

We can actually do all these things.  We can paint portraits.  We can write books. We can play.   We may not be that great at any of it, but we can still do it. We can have a go.

I strongly believe we can pretty much do anything we put our minds to.  We may not be able to make a living off it, nor win any prizes for it, nor get much feedback for it, but we can still do it.

Our singer redeems himself in the end.  By the last verse he's changed his "coulds" to "wills" and decided to go for it.  "Anything that I can do, I'll do it for you".

Good boy.  Now you're talking singing my language.

Got something you want to do?

Get rid of the "if I could, I would" mindset and just bloody well make it happen.  Paint the portrait, write the book and play up a storm.

It's Monday.  Perfect day for it.

Glad I go that off my chest.  Over to you!

This post was inspired by Denyse Whelan's Life This Week prompt "if I could", as well as some Monday gusto and a  big dose of "let's do this" as I give myself a kick up the bum to get stuff done.

  1. OMG That's EXACTLY what came to mind when I saw this prompt. As an aside, I have the album on vinyl. As for the if I could bit? It all sounds a too regretty for me - & I don't do regrets. They don't work. No regrets - they only hurt (that one's from a Robbie Williams song...)

  2. Dah da da dah .... yep now it's stuck in my head. Fellow child of the 80s here. I have not even thought about that song in ages. I'm no fan or regrets either - but if I could I'd make sure the future was bright for my kids. (And I guess I do in the best ways I can.)

  4. I thought of "If I could turn back time" but that was it. No knowledge of your song. TOOOO old.
Have you read or listened to Elizabeth Gilbert on Big Magic. You have almost quoted her: paint the damn portait, etc. She says in addition, you do not have to make it your career. Just do it for the sake of creativity. Listening to her again now after a 2 year break.
Thank you for linking up for #lifethisweek. Next week's optional prompt is: Countries I Have Visited. Denyse x
