It was a road trip down the Hume Highway that brought us here yesterday with a rest stop at Holbrook to climb on the submarine and buy some delights from the town bakery*. Three different people told me I just HAD TO call in and buy some pasteries, so I figured that was a pretty good testimonial. I can highly recommend their chicken and asparagus pie and the custard slice.

The drive from Canberra to Melbourne is actually very easy and as the driver I find it fairly quick. I was schocked to realise it had taken us 3.5 hours to get to Holbrook. I felt like I'd only been on the road for two. With all the country towns now by-passed (except Holbrook where construction is underway) it's a smooth journey and very safe.
Because our trip was a last minute decision we found it very hard to get accommodation at a price we were willing to pay. We've ended up in Kew at the Park Avenue in Wapole Street (there are two sets of these apartments in this street). We've got three adults and a tweenie in a very spacious two bedroom place which has only cost us $660 for three nights. That's still fairly pricy but given all the other quotes from around Melbourne came back at $900+ for the four people I'd say we got ourselves a bargain. A gorgeous unit in an absolutely beautiful suburb.
The bad news is we're quite some distance from the Sports and Aquatic Centre and we've got about a half hour drive to get there and set up the stall. So that means I need to sign off and get outa here.

*The Holbrook Bakery is on the main street on the opposite side of the road to the submarine. Not to be mistaken for the other Holbrook Bakery which is further south as you head out of town. It could be a great bakery too ... I just haven't tried that one.
