Day 1102 - The school holiday "work/play" juggle

A school holiday guilt trip ...

There's this conflict as a parent where you feel guilty for working when you could be spending time with the kids, then when you do take time out, you feel guilty for not getting your work done.

Derek and I took time off during the ACT school holidays to take the kids to the coast for some family fun time. It was a juggling act between working remotely to maintain productivity and letting the kids know we were actively part of their lives.

Now that we are home the juggling continues as I try to catch up and maintain business momentum while giving the kids something more than XBox and  iPods to stimulate them. Not that there is anything wrong with down time, it's essential, but school holidays can also involved an element of new experiences and fun.

So today I vowed to do half a day in the home office and half a day in a remote office, aka the mall.

Good plan.  No actually, GREAT plan. I could take Darby and a mate to the Tunzafun gaming arcade (rainy day in Canberraville) and work in their cafe area, PLUS I had the added bonus of spending my birthday Colette voucher while I was there (BEST SHOP EVER).

The theory was magic. The practice was frustrating fascinating.

My wireless device decided to reboot itself and needed administrative support.  No work on my iddy biddy laptop.

AND my Colette voucher was sitting on my bedside table.

Bugger and bugger.

So while the boys had a ball, I spent my time thinking of all the things I could be doing (preparing for book four launch, filling out on-line application for two grants, product back orders, US scoping tour, magazine contacts ..) and also salivating over all the things I could have bought at Colette!

Instead of tapping away at a keyboard I wrote copious notes in my notebook for follow up action at home and instead of buying way beyond my voucher limits I took many photos of the handbags I most love to sift through and make a final choice before my next visit.  I guess it was still a win.

Colette handbags - loving that navy and white one at bottom right

Colette handbags - which to choose?

Some questions:

Whether you are a SAHM, WAHM or outside the home working parent, how do you handle the work/leisure school holiday balance?

How good is the new white accent range in Colette?

If you were an arcade game which would you be?

I think I would be the one where you bonk the animals on the head when they peak out of their holes.

  1. Isn't it funny how the universe just seems to work against you some days?
We only had one week of holidays here so I pretty much just devoted the whole time to the kids and holiday fun.

  2. I'm lucky that my husband is a teacher so he has school holidays off with them but I always try to have a week off work to spend some time with all of them, if I can. It's a hard juggle, no matter how you deal with it!

  3. I find it easier now with my oldest, who loves to sleep in till midday on holidays, then eat and watch telly in the arvo :) It will be harder when my two little ones are at school. But I love that pic of your kids with their grandad on the beach - that's what holidays are good for, spending time with the extended family.

  4. I work from home and end up trying to do all of it in the evenings. My children are still very young so it is possible. I can imagine that as they grow older this will become more difficult. great post thank you.

I love hearing your thoughts! Keep them rolling in :)
