Day 1744 - Backyard Buddies
Want to care for a penguin? You can "adopt"!
Derek recently donated money to the Backyard Buddies program which is designed to help native animals that share our built-up areas, waterways, backyards and parks. He chose specifically to support the world's smallest penguin in Tasmania. Australia's own "Little Penguin" lives along the southern edge of mainland Australia and in Tasmania, and it also occurs in New Zealand and the Chatham Islands. The buddy program keeps an eye on these little fellas and builds little boxes for them to "live in" to protect them from dangers due to human interaction (noise, disturbance, development, weeds, dogs and foxes). To recognise our financial support for these little buddies we received a plush penguin to remind us of the difference we are making to this little critter's life. The Backyard Buddies Program is run by the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife. There are a bunch of animals and plants you can assist either via financial support or by rolling up your sleeves and becoming a Backyard Buddy yourself. For more information go to www.backyardbuddies.net.au. Next time you're thinking of buying a soft toy for a child ... perhaps donate to the Buddy Program instead so that you are doubling the impact of your gift.

That's a great program and kids would definitely be involved if it included a soft toy. I know I would have when I was young.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea. I will definitely keep it in mind :)
ReplyDeleteGreat cause Leanne, and had to laugh at your comment on my blog. Just ignore the 'over' thing, I'm just a picky journo! xx
