Day 1805 - Coconut Oil

The health benefits of coconut oil

Two weeks ago Tahlia woke up the day before an important photo shoot with swollen eyes. The skin around them was dry and she was puffy and had a serious bout of golf ball action going on.  #panic.

I called a beautician friend who suggested anti-histamines and coconut oil.

Coconut oil?

For around $11 we were able to buy a big jar of coconut oil from the health food aisle at Woolworths. Tahlia rubbed it into her the skin around her eyes.  It took a couple of days for it to work (there was still panic on photo shoot day) but the end result was wonderful.

I am now a coconut oil convert #magic.

Coconut oil is a unique combination of fatty acids that can help with weight loss, better brain function, tending to over dry skin and hair and various other benefits.

Coconut oil is a great substitute for the normal oils used in cooking.   It has no cholesterol and no dangerous trans-fats.  It is processed directly to the liver which means no strain on the digestive system.  It's highly recommended for people who have trouble digesting fats.

Here's the drill:

  1. The medium chain triglycerides found in coconut oil go straight to the liver where they are turned into ketone bodies that have therapeutic effects on brain disorders such as epilepsy and Alzheimer's
  2. Populations that eat a LOT of coconut are among the healthiest people in the world (Tokelauans and Kitavans are in excellent health with no evidence of heart disease)
  3. Coconut oil can increase energy expenditure to help burn more fat
  4. The lauric acid in coconut oil can kill bacteria, virus, fungi and can stave off infections
  5. The fatty acids in coconut oil can significantly reduce appetite which may positively effect body weight over the long term
  6. Studies show that coconut oil is an effective skin moisturizer, protects against hair damage, works as a mild form of sunscreen and can even be used as a mouth wash.

Now I don't know about all of this and can only trust that what I read has some substance.  But I can tell you that when used topically it definitely made a positive impact on Tahlia's skin.

We also tried it on her scalp to help combat the flakiness brought on by the harshness of the Canberra winter, plus we worked in through her hair as a treatment.  The next day her hair was glossy and her her scalp less itchy.

I'm now using it on my VERY ITCHY neck (no idea what is going on there but it is driving me insane) and rubbing into my Deep Fried elbows.

I'd say it's a good super food to add to the Deep Fried shopping list.

  1. Love coconut oil. As I am lactose intolerant it is also a godsend as it can be subbed in anywhere butter is listed in a recipe.

A great use I learned 2 winters ago- mixture of coconut oil, raw honey and cinnamon = great treatment for sore throats!!

  2. I love coconut oil. Such a great product and good for everything! I love using it as a hair mask, face mask and in smoothies. :) Popping over from #ibot

  3. YES!! I love coconut oil. I try to substitute it in my cooking where ever possible, or baking. It's a little tough because the brand I use is raw and cold pressed so the coconut flavour can be strong, not something you really want to cook your eggs in. haha! I buy a 900gr jar for around $13 from Costco when I'm in Sydney. It's the cheapest I've found. It's by Absolute Organic. - Peachy Keen Mumma

  4. My hubby has read a lot of its benefits so when we were in Aust recently, we brought back like 4-5 bottles of it! It's not that easy to find in Singapore. Thanks for the extra tips on using it to reduce puffy eyes too and itchy scalps!

  5. Good to know! It's a bit of a miracle cure, isn't it?

  6. Coconut oil, Organic Apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil are about all you need for your medicine cabinet. All magical, each with hundreds of uses. All good!

  7. I'll have to get some coconut oil! I've never used it before. Sounds like a fantastic multi-tasking product!

  8. I've heard so much about coconut oil but never used it myself. My skin has been a bit dry all over with Breastfeeding. Drinking more water and using coconut oil should help

  9. I had no idea! I'm keen to give it a go now. My feet have been really dry after winter.

  10. I use a shampoo and conditioner with coconut oil in it's made a huge difference in my hair. This time last year my hair felt like straw and was just gross, since using the coconut oil though it's nice and glossy. The dandruff and itchiness has decreased but it hasn't completely gone so I might have to do a deep treatment with it!

  11. I've just started eating chia seeds in my yoghurt and muesli. Sounds like I need to invest in some coconut oil, too!

  12. Wow! I have some of this in the cupboard right now! I'm going to forget about cooking with it and start rubbing it under my eyes and on my elbows! Anything is worth a shot :)

  13. I love coconut oil - use it for everything - cooking, moisturising, hair cleaning, digestive help, everything :) Great post.
