Day 1821 - Spring Cleaning

Out with the old, in with the new

I don't know about you, but we tend to live in a state of "ignorant bliss"at our house when it comes to the increasingly cluttered space we call home.  It's easy to notice the clutter and dirt in other people's homes, but often we are so used to our own living space that we become blind to the chaos.

It's spring. The perfect time for spring cleaning.

Today I tackled our laundry.  A very dirty and neglected laundry.  A stifling place to be. This was a mammoth task given our laundry is big enough to have a party in.  That is the place where all old beach towels, toys, sun hats, swim goggles, shopping bags, mops, curtain rods and school uniforms go to die.

I was ruthless.

No more "just in case".

I turfed it all.

Well, I lie.  When it comes to the boxes of toys there is always a "just in case".  We have a grand daughter now after all.  Plus my boy is only ten! I'm not ready to say goodbye to my "baby" just yet.  Selling his toys would mark the end of a phase I am finding it hard to part with. But don't worry .. I'm getting there. There may be a couple of ads on All Classifieds soon.

But besides the toys, I did manage to clean up a lot! I didn't think to take a before shot (which may have been in self defense) but I did take some after photos.

After:  Something that kind of looks like a laundry again

After: Some order in the chaos
We even put the old broken washing machine on the front curb for pick up today.  Big achievement.

Out with the old
Already I am breathing deeper and with more peace.  The laundry is no longer an angry tangled forest pulling at Snow White's dress.  It is more of an ordered space of light and hope.

How's your house looking?

Is there a room that needs an overhaul?

There are health benefits to spring cleaning including:
  • Reducing allergens
  • Healthier living (get rid of the mold, bacteria and harmful germs)
  • Relieves stress and tension (cleaning helps us focus on the task at hand and ease the other worries)
  • Renews calm (a clean and tidy home creates a clean and tidy mind)
  • Exercise (yeah it's of that incidental variety but at least you're up and moving around)
Try looking at your home with brand new eyes and actually SEE what is there.  How much of it is needed? How much of it is habit? How much of it is actually rubbish?  How much of it is dirty? Spring is the perfect time to get rid of the old and welcome in some renewed energy, light and peace.

Have you done a spring clean lately?

  1. Now you've made me feel guilty...:(

  2. Yes a fee if my rooms are definitely due for some spring cleaning...the task when the kids go back to school next week. That is one big fantastic laundry you have there...but I know the danger of having big spaces like that is they become dumping grounds for everything! Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. I'm hoping to give our kitchen a makeover. A HUGE motivation to declutter the stuff there and make it all welcoming again! ;p

  4. I cleaned my 8yr old sons' rooms - what a mess. They were on a family sleepover.

Our laundry is a tiny box - OMG I am so envious of your space.

I think I need to tackle my laundry today. I've have half done my office/study and almost caught up on folding and ironing.

  5. My laundry is kept tidy because it's small but one area of our house that needs an overhaul is the garage. I can't stand clutter either. Your laundry looks great. :)

  6. It's such a good feeling to get rid of stuff you don't need.
Last week I did all our wardrobes, and the garage is next on my list.

  7. My house in is need of a very good spring clean, just need to find the motivation

  8. It looks great! I'm currently in the process of spring cleaning my craft area. It's certainly not fun, but it will be worth it! :-)

  9. I need to declutter my wardrobe again. It feels like I only did it yesterday but alas, the mess tells me otherwise! As for incidental exercise - so true!

I love hearing your thoughts! Keep them rolling in :)
