Day 2007 - Writing the next book

It's time to hit the writer's zone again.

Writing this blog post from my coastal perch

For the last few months I have been getting emails and Facebook PM's asking when my next book will be out.  There are a bunch of little people out there just itching to get some more Cheer Chick Charlie in their life.  This warms my heart. It also reminds me of how an author needs to make time to be an author.  Something I have not done for over twelve months now.

When I started the Cheer Chick Charlie series it was my intention to write three or four books a year.  I wrote four in the first twelve months but only one each year since.  The reality of the situation is twofold: (1) Time and (2) Money.

You see, when you self publish you have to go about the business of being a publisher as well as an author.

A publisher needs to get involved in the distribution, marketing and the PR.  Much of my time right now is spent on making people aware that Cheer Chick Charlie exists.

Then there's the whole thing about me creating a brand out of this little character.  So not only am I in the business of being an author and a publisher, I am now also in the business of being a brand developer (which includes a product line) and a brand ambassador (which has me promoting the brand).

Then I made the crazy decision to turn Charlie's website into something interactive so that kids could have access to Charlie even when they've finished reading the books.  A place for free printables, healthy food ideas and exercise videos.  So now I'm also a website manager and the creator of puzzles and fun super snacks.

Let's not forget I have an "offshoot" thing going on where the Cheer Chicks have their own channel teaching children how to become cheerleaders in their own homes. Their show has now been picked up by the Cheer Channel Network (online) in the USA which means added pressure of creating new  videos a few times a year.

Plus there's the Cheer Chick Charlie gaming app which is now available on iTunes.

I've kinda created something enormous with me at the helm of all of it! Only me.

All of this takes a great deal of time and money.

Writing and publishing the books also takes time and money.

Given it's now April and book number seven should have been written and be ready to go to print right now is causing me a great deal of anxiety.

But this week is the week.  Tomorrow I sneak off to a place where I can write uninterrupted for hours and hours and hours on end.  I won't be a mum, a consultant, a publisher, a website guru, a brand ambassador, a business owner or a blogger.

Just an author.

Someone will feed me and remind me to drink water.  I will just sit and type and HOPE that Charlie flows from my heart into a brand new storyline.

HOPE is the word.  Because as I sit here today I have no clear direction as to where Charlie is headed tomorrow.  Where Charlie goes next will be a new to me as it will be to the kids who are hanging out for this next book.

I sure hope my creative juices are ready to flow.

If you're interested in hearing how I write my books (where the creative juices come from) check out this post I wrote two years ago as I got ready to write book five.

I will be offline for the next few days as I bring Charlie back to life.  Posts on this blog will be pre-written and scheduled.

Have a great week everyone!

  1. Wow - you have my admiration! What an achievement to have created a character, books and everything else around it! Sounds like you might need to hire an assistant to help you soon though! Good luck with writing the next book :-)

  2. I hope the writing is going smashingly :)

  3. Oh I hope you have a wonderful time off being nothing but writer for a bit! Hoping those creative juices are flowing and Charlie is off running into a new adventure! :)

Plus wow! talk about taking a theme and running with it in a bunch of directions. I didn't realise Charlie existed in so many arenas!

  4. Good luck with the writing process. I'm sure that Charlie will roll onto the page full steam ahead.
You're very inspiring in all that you have acheived, and continue to acheive, well done (I will be heading off to further explore your books, as I review children's books, and am interested in writing a couple myself).

  5. Go you, Charlie is just waiting to come alive with your words! Good luck xx

  6. I am so impressed ( and a little jealous) with all your amazing work
And dedication. People who don't write don't understand the unpaid commitment it takes. I wish you the world of like...

  7. You know I think you're amazing. You really really are.
Good luck tomorrow. And have fun. xx

  8. Oh, that sounds so exciting and I had no idea you had built this empire! Very impressive!

  10. I totally remembering that post 2 years ago when you escaped just to write! All the best and here's to flowing words!

  11. So much goes on behind the scenes that many don't realise. Go you. You've done an awesome job building Cheer Chick Charlie and everything that goes along with it. Now you deserve some quiet time to write again. Good luck with it. xxxx

  12. Good luck! Will check out on Charlie website :)

  13. You really are a jack of all trades!! Good luck with the writing! I'm sure you'll knock it out of the park.
