Day 2056 - The health benefits of grapes

Did you know that the grape is considered to be a berry?

According to there are 72 million tonnes of grapes produced every year worldwide with most of them being used to produce 7.2 trillion gallons of wine.

But you don't have to drink wine to get the health benefits. It's right there in front of you in its raw form.

So what are the health benefits of the humble grape?

Well, for a start, past studies suggest they can help prevent cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and constipation.

There is even one school of thought that suggest they can even assist with allergies (although there are no human tests to prove this theory).

Scientists have also been checking out grapes and their resveratrol content in relation to treating diabetes, Alzheimer's Disease and menopause.

For more information about this science head to

Grapes are very low in calories and they contain fibre, vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, iron and folate.  They are nutrient rich yet low in calories making them the perfect snack food.

They are also high in water content which is fantastic for hydration (and I'm talking about the grapes people ... not the wine).

Grapes are high in antioxidants which means they can help you fight those damn free radicals.  They have the kind of antioxidants that assist with eye health, plus the really good ones (found in their skin) which can protect against chronic diseases and conditions.

So all in all grapes are handy fellas to have around.

I have a bowl permanently sitting on the kitchen bench.  I find that everyone tends to grab a handful each day as they wander past.  It's a great way to get a little bit of extra nutrition into our diets.
