Day 2084 - Epsom Salts

How Epsom Salts can help with migraine.

Apparently Epsom Salts aren't actually salt at all, but a naturally occurring mineral compound made up of magnesium and sulfate,  The name Epsom comes from the area in which these "salts" were found (Epsom in Surrey, England).  Epsom Salts have been touted for their health benefits for hundreds of years.

Some of the suggested health benefits include:
  • Relaxing the central nervous system
  • Curing skin problems
  • Soothing pain and aching limbs
  • Easing muscle strain
  • Healing cuts
  • Treating cold and congestion
  • Drawing toxins from the body

Sheena Aurora, MD, Clinical associate professor of neurology and neurological sciences at Stanford University Medical School in California, suggests that Epsom Salts can also help to treat migraines.

OK, I'm listening.

In Redbook Magazine May 2015, she suggests that by simply drawing a warm bath with Epsom Salts when you feel a headache coming on can make a big difference.  Epsom Salts are absorbed through the skin raising the body's levels of magnesium which is an anti-inflammatory that may calm hyperexcitability in the brain.  She explains that hyperexcitability is a genetic thing that makes the brain more sensitive to fluctuations in weather, diet, stress and hormones.  All of which can bring on headaches.

So I am thinking that if Epsom Salts help with headaches/migraine, they may also help with fibromyalgia given it is also affected by the weather and stress.

Given I suffer from migraine and fibro, I'd say these Epsom baths are worth a shot!

Epsom Salts are available from any supermarket for around $3.50 for a 375gm box.  Bargain!
