Day 2321 - Audio books and exercise

Could you read a book and exercise at the same time?

Sitting on an exercise bike or walking on a treadmill is a great way to exercise and read at the same time.

I've had many a trash mag on the treadmill with me, and a friend of mine was quite an expert at reading full hardcover novels on the exercise bike. EBooks make it even easier with iPad holders able to attach to gym equipment.

But what if you don't have a home gym? Could you read a book while you walk around the lake?

Of course you can - with an audio book!

Lately I've been thinking a lot about audio books.

Now that my boy is in high school there is a need for him to read chunky books for English. Dyslexia and chunky books are not a good combination. So rather than make him suffer through the eye strain, brain McFuddles and a hundred hours of frustration, I'm on a mission to get his books on audio.

As an avid reader I'd never really thought much about audio books until now.  I mean, I read because I like to actually READ.  But reading isn't just about reading. It's about absorbing a story in a way that allows you to create your own vision of the story that's unique to you.

With an audio book you still get that experience.

Audio books may just help kids like my son engage in books.

Audio books may also help encourage Deep Fried people like me to exercise both the mind and the body at the same time!

It could also help the time poor to kill two birds with one stone. Note: I don't condone the killing of birds. Especially with stones.  And definitely not two at the same time. 

If you're not much into exercise, but you are into reading, this might be a way to get you walking. Imagine waking up each day NEEDING to get your sneakers on because you can't wait to hear what happens next.

  1. I've used audio books when walking - Obama's Audacity of Hope made me feel particuarly virtuous. I now spend a gazillion hours in the car, so I use them then. Currently listening to a fairly average crime novel on POW's stuck in Vietnam...(post war)

  2. I've never listened to audio books before! I do however read books and magazines whilst on my treadmill at home. Helps the time go faster! :-)

  3. I must admit I've never listened to an audio book before, but I'm big into podcasts at the moment. I should give it a go. I know it would be a different experience than actually reading words.

  4. Well I'm time poor, want to read more and need to get more walking into my life, so even though I'm not convinced... I'm going to have to attempt this.

  5. I feel like audiobooks are following me around the interwebs at the moment, and then I stumble across your post! I need to get into them, I think. Although I won't be doing a whole lot of walking around lakes on my crutches for a few weeks!

  6. I can't read and exercise at the same time, even on a treadmill! I have zero balance or co-ordination and need to focus all of my attention just to stay on board! I've never thought of listening to audio books, but I have just started listening to podcasts which I love because they're short and sweet. Not only do I have no co-ordination but I have the concentration span of a flea so the timing is just dandy! Here's to multi tasking and entertainment on the move!

  7. I haven't tried them but to me it feels wrong somehow. Probably how some people feel about ebooks. I could do it possibly if I was on a car ride, but I enjoy reading too much. I'm a visual person.

  8. I have to say, I haven't managed to read an audio book as yet. I much prefer to read the hard copy. Like Jess, I could maybe listen in the car, but only on my own, as I'm sure the kids wouldn't be interested in anything I want to read, LOL! :-)

  9. I feel like I can't really comment since I haven't exercised in SO LONG but I did remember going for longer if I was watching a movie or TV show or something to distract me!

  11. That's a great idea. The only audio books I've listened to are kids ones. I don't think they do the voices as well as I do ;)

  12. I've never "read" an audio book but I like the idea, especially when I'm on my treadmill. Must try it!

  13. I prefer music to pump me along with exercise but I do enjoy an audio book on solo road trips. I once listened to heaps of podcasts from Darren (ProBlogger) - filled in 4 hours very easily :) x

  14. I haven't had an audio book since I was a teenager. I've looked into them a couple of times for my phone but the price has been a bit much for me.

  15. Growing up in a generation without audiobooks, now with the access of them, we can all enjoy driving while 'reading' or jogging while 'reading.' Not to mention how convenient they are especially in the lives of people who are too music to sit down and grab an actual book to read while trying to juggle work, social life and looking after the family.
