Day 2405 - High Energy Snack Ideas

Are you are snacker?

It's actually OK to snack in between meals. It's what you choose to snack on that's the issue.

I've noticed lately that with the weather getting colder and with me travelling so much and losing energy, I've taken to craving sugar.  Cookies, cake, chocolate, ice cream, Nutella, honey on toast ...

Let's just say the mirrors at H&M yesterday were very proud to show me my newly baked muffin top.

So it's time to get serious about my snacking.

I've gone in search of some high energy snack options to help curb the cravings, boost my energy and feed my winter soul.

According to Prevention Magazine June/July 2016, "45% of us turn to pizza, chocolate or ice-cream when stressed".

Yep.  That rings a bell ...

Here are some snack ideas they suggest are high in fibre, fat and protein, which will nourish the body AND calm a stressed mind.

  • Peanut butter and banana on wholegrain toast
  • Roasted chickpeas done with extra virgin olive oil, spices and oven baked at 200 degrees for 30 minutes
  • Veggies like carrot, celery, capsicum and cauliflower dipped in hummus
  • Dark chocolate almonds (30g) to help reduce stress hormones and protect the heart  
  • Herbal teas such as chamomile, green tea and peppermint can relax the mind an aids mindfulness
  • Trail mix including walnuts and a sprinkle of dark chocolate chips
  • Yoghurt with blueberries and a sprinkling of oats
  • Energy balls made with dates, nut butter and rolled oats. 

So if you're a snacker, perhaps these will help you eat less sugar and create a more sustainable energy while keeping that muffin top at bay.  Thanks H&M for giving me four way mirrors to discover the dirty truth.

  1. I snack on nuts or soy crisps at work and if I'm home a slice of cheese!

    1. That sounds like fairly decent snacking Michelle. A hell of a lot better than choc chip cookies, cake and bread.

  2. A timely post and reminder for me, Leanne. I need to make better snack choices myself and look at portion control too. Heading to the US soon so had best have a plan of attack before leaving.
