Day 2451 - Why crying is good for you

When was the last time you had a good cry?

I remember a friend once saying that she schedules her break-downs.  If she's feeling a little on edge or her resilience is low she actually schedules herself a crying session so that she gets it all out rather than drop her bundle in a "straw that broke the camels back" moment that takes everyone by surprise.

How does one schedule a break-down? Well, the best way to do it is to have some time alone (a couch day perhaps), put on a tear jerker movie, and just go for it.  Let it all out.

Not everybody cries.  There are many of us who prefer the stiff upper lip and all that. But crying is good for us.  It helps us to age positively.

In a recent issue of Yours Magazine Australia, Dr Judy Hyde, Clinical Psychologist suggested 5 reasons why crying is good:

  1. It cleans and protects our eyes (tears provide lubrication)
  2. It boosts our mood (by cleansing you emotionally)
  3.  It reduces stress levels (by washing away certain chemicals)
  4. It fights off bacteria (tear ducts produce antibacterial chemicals that fight off eye infections)
  5. It lessons pain (emotional tears produce leucine enkephalin which acts as a natural painkiller)

  4. I love a good cry every now and then. Sad or emotional movies will do it to me every time, as well as some ads on TV! Of course, there's also the sad and emotional real life moments when I really show my teary form :)

  5. I knew that it was 'good to cry' and I do. However, there have been times in this recent BIG life transitions I wish it wasnt always accompanied by tears. I tell myself that it all needs to come out. But it can be ugly. And I get sore eyes afterwards funnily enough!

  6. I used to have a particular episode of a TV show I would watch if I wanted a good cry, but that has worked less for me recently :( I actually do feel I'm kind of overdue for a good cry, but can't.

  7. I cried last week when I came downstairs for breakfast and realised that there wasn't any pastries left in the house. My other half had eaten one in front of me upstairs and I had assumed there were some more! If hs was in the house when I cried I think he'd have gone and bought me one! Seems silly now but it felt right last week! #pocolo
