Could cold water be the trick to instant calm?
We use the term "hot head" when people are cranky for a reason. It's because we do actually get hot in the head when certain emotions arise.
The antidote could well be cold water.
According to some health experts by putting our hands in cold water for just 30 seconds we can reduce the feelings of anxiety and anger. Apparently it releases the happy hormone, oxytocin.
It's also suggested that by dripping cool water on the pressure points of the wrist and splashing it behind the ears, we cool the arteries right under the skin, reducing the heat and calming the whole body.
Some psychologists even go so far as to suggest filling a bowl with water and ice and putting your face in if you're after instant calm. Although they do suggest you come up to breathe (thanks for that) and also suggest to have a tissue handy if you're wearing mascara (of course!).
So if you're feeling stressed, anxious, angry or hot in the head, cold water could well be the answer for instant calm.
