Day 2581 - How to eat for good adrenal health

Ever heard of adrenal fatigue?

Back in 2006 I left my job in the Australian Government to concentrate on raising my kids.

My job was very demanding and as with anything, I had put a great deal of energy into it.  When I stopped, after 13 years of pushing myself to the max, I just crashed.

Cue chronic fatigue.  Cue the onset of fibromyalgia.

One of the first things I did when the fatigue hit was to go to a naturopath.

They advised me that my adrenal gland had been compromised.  Apparently I'd been running on adrenaline for so long that I now had adrenal fatigue which possibly triggered my fibromyalgia.

Adrenal fatigue is a term used to describe symptoms caused by a poorly working adrenal gland.  This often happens to people who are under mental, emotional or physical stress.

Our adrenal glands make hormones, one of which is cortisol, which helps our body deal with stress.

The good news is we can actually help our adrenal health with attention to our diet.

Foods to avoid include:  

  • Caffeine
  • Sugar and sweeteners
  • Processed and microwaved foods
  • Hydrogenated oils
Foods good for adrenal health include: 

  • Coconut
  • Olives
  • Avocado
  • Asparagus
  • Cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts etc)
  • Fatty fish (eg salmon)
  • Chicken
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Kelp
  • Himalayan sea salt

Healthy life habits include getting 8-10 hours sleep a night, getting to bed before 10pm, minimising work and relationship stress, eating well, reducing caffeine and sugar, exercising and laughing daily.

  1. I think this (adrenal health) sits almost side by side with my thyroid (Hashimotos) issues, similar foods to eliminate as well, although I've had to give up gluten, dairy, corn, soy and pork. I struggle with the coffee side of things though but I'm down to just one cup a day at worst. Most days now I'm sticking to herbal tea when I feel like a hot drink. Not really the same kick as coffee.

  3. I've been told I have adrenal fatigue too, also from a long-term stressful job! I've overhauled my diet dramatically, but one thing I can't give up is my coffee... but I have cut down, so that's got to count for something doesn't it?! I feel amazing compared to how I felt six months ago - but that could also be because I left the stressful job. But eating this way is second nature now, so I'll stick with it :).

  4. Yes similar issues with autoimmune health problems and food intolerances. Just curious about the no microwaved foods thing- why?

  5. I had adrenal fatigue back in 2012 when I walked away from my corporate life. I had been experiencing chronic stress for a long time but didn't realise it because it had become my normal. I was overworked, always on the go, never had down time except for some sleep at night (not much) and though I don't have fibromyalgia, I have other conditions as a result of that period of my life. I live life very differently now! xo p.s. I do most of your suggestions but have not been able to kick coffee!!

Our adrenals are a real barometer for our overall health I reckon and when we have chronic stress it is like they are constantly pumping out cortisol and the sympathetic nervous system is switched on all the time. I've made lifestyle changes to reduce stress and I try to practice, and teach my students, yoga postures and breathing exercises to massage the adrenals and reduce stress. Coffee still a habit for me though.

  7. I have definitely heard about it when I was falling apart a bit Adrenal Fatigue was one the radar. Good tips on what to eat. I'm glad to see chicken and avo on the list. I can do those. :)

  8. I have had and dare say have again adrenal fatigue. It's tough but surprisingly simple to avoid and treat. I'm not sure why I let myself get to this point again.

  9. It's fascinating how food can be such a healer, isn't it? It's funny because although some of these foods are good for adrenal fatigue they're not good for thyroid disorders and broccoli is my all time favourite. I just can't give it up :(

  12. I am so guilty of consuming all the "not allowed" items. I was told i have adrenal issues but it's so darn hard to completely cut those from my life.
