Day 2837 - What's the one thing you couldn't live without?

Is there one thing you need in your life that helps you to be you?

No doubt in your lifetime you've heard the question: "What is the one thing you'd take with you to a deserted island".  It's a standard question to encourage people to think about what's truly important to them.  In fact, it's listed as one of the best "left of centre" questions to ask at interview, designed to test a person's resourcefulness and imagination.

I'd like to take the question one step further, while putting the whole "deserted island" thing to the side.

What is the one thing you need in your life that helps you be you?

Tough question!

It makes the whole "deserted island" scenario seem easy.  I mean, on a deserted island you can say stuff like "fresh water for survival" or "my phone to keep in contact with the outside world" (in the hope a deserted island might have a mobile phone tower) or "my husband to keep me warm at night" or "paper and a pen to write the next top novel about a person on a deserted island".

But deserted island aside, what's the one thing in your current life that you couldn't live without?

It's a question I've been pondering on for a few days now. I've thought of all the surface level stuff like phone, computer, cheese slicer, Nutri Ninja.  I've then thought about the bigger ticket items like house, car, heating.  I've pondered on the people like my kids, husband, parents, friends.  I've even wondered about my health, well being, fitness and happiness.

Then I looked beyond all of that and thought bigger picture.

What is the one thing that despite all else helps me to be the best me that I can be?

When am I most content?  When am I most happy? When am I most well?  When am I most productive?

What's the one thing I couldn't live without?

And it hit me.

I can't live without blue sky.

I couldn't live in a place of grey, drizzle, fog or darkness.  I couldn't be in a place that has 20 hours of night and only 4 hours of day.  I couldn't live in a place where it rains constantly.  I couldn't cope with constant grey cloud.

I'm a blue sky girl and it's those blue sky days that help me to be the best me I can be.

So with that in mind, and in answer to the deserted island question, I guess I would take my sunscreen!

What's the one thing you couldn't live without?

Is there one thing you need in your life that helps you to be you?

Remember:  The blue sky is always up there. You've just got to rise above the clouds to find it.

Today's post was prompted by Denyse Whelan for her "Life This Week" linky.

  1. Lucky you live in sunny Australia then! I don't think England would be your cup of tea :D

  2. Oh so many things but I guess after cancer, I would take my health. Without health, nothing is possible.

  3. I hadn't thought about the sky - but you're right, on those drizzly gray days I certainly feel dreary and sunshine always makes me smile (except when we get a run of 35+ degree days - then I need a bit of billowy cloud!)

  4. I'm with you on the blue skies! I know that I can live without my phone, having been without reception for the past two days and then leaving it in Yosemite National Park (accidentally with Mr M's parents). I'll be living without it for one more day ;)

  5. Spot on Leanne, only this morning I was looking at the clear blue sky in Brisbane. The sun was shining and I just felt at peace. I think you have nailed it.

  6. Blue sky is such a mood lifter. My other half grew up in Canberra and always reminds people that winter might be cold there but the colder the night the sunnier the day. So true. Our winter here in Mallacoota has been pretty much sunny and so much nicer. It is one of the things we noticed most after the grey days when we lived in Melbourne. And I love your comment about getting above the clouds :-)

  7. I do love me some blue sky too Leanne! Love that quote at the end too! :-)

  8. Love this and so true... cannot live without this amazing blue Australian sky overhead.

  9. Great question to ponder on! I love the blue sky too, and wildflowers, and taking photos!
Have a fabulous blue sky week and thank you for stopping by my blog last week.

  10. Thank you so much for linking up for #lifethisweek 28/52. As it is my first week back since major surgery and I am very much in recuperative mode, I am leaving this general comment on your blog this week. Many thanks for your support of my blog and my recovery, Denyse x
    Next Week's Prompt: Winter.

  11. Too true. I'm probably gonna have to go with CHOCOLATE though ... nom nom nom

I love hearing your thoughts! Keep them rolling in :)
