Day 2940 - Wellness Wednesday - improve your memory with pink noise

Pink is the new white

It's possible that in your lifetime someone may have suggested "white noise" in regards to helping settle the mind and get good quality sleep.  Essentially white noise is a "consistent noise that comes out evenly across all hearable frequencies."

The sound of static on the TV is an example of white noise.  So is the sound of a fan and the hissing of steam from an air purifier.

Well, you can forget white! I've just learned that pink noise is even better.

What is pink noise you ask?

Pink noise has a power per hertz that decreases as the frequency increases.  Apparently it has rhythmic variation and sounds similar to rain falling on the sidewalk or a waterfall.

Researchers have found that this pink noise can boost memory during deep sleep.  According to Prevention Magazine Australia (October/November 2017) A study at Northwestern University in the US found that participants who had been exposed to pink noise while sleeping performed better in memory tests than when they weren't exposed to pink noise.

So how do we get ourselves some pink noise?

There's an app for that! It's very aptly named "Pink Noise" and is available on iTunes for free. You can also head to You Tube for ten hours of pink noise which should be more than enough to get you through the night.

So there you have it.  Pink noise could well be the soothing sounds you need to keep your brain going strong as you age.

  1. Oooo, I love that. The idea of always taking a waterfall or rain on a sidewalk with me is pretty soothing. Thanks for the tip!

  2. It want to try this just for the name alone!

  3. I have lots of good wishes for all these participants.Although I am these days too much busy in assignment writing services online but I want to attend the main event.Thank you for sharing this post.

I love hearing your thoughts! Keep them rolling in :)
