Day 3295 - We see what we want to see, we hear what we want to hear

Perception is an interesting thing ...

We see the world not as it is, but as we are.

If we are angry, bitter and negative, then we tend to view the world through angry, bitter and negative eyes.  If we are open, friendly and positive then we tend to focus on the good in each situation.

As the volunteer Communications Manager of a large sporting club you can imagine I get quite a few emails. Most are pleasant. In fact I could safely say that 99.9% of all correspondence I receive is lovely.  But when you get that 0.01 percenter come through ... look out.

I recently received an email from a disgruntled parent and no matter how lovely I was nor how positive I tried to spin the situation, he could not see the bright side.  There were so many positives in his dilemma but he could not would not focus on the good stuff.  His vision was clouded, grey and drizzly.  His storm was brewing and no amount of sunshine (and smiley faces) could brighten his skies.

While trying to appease him (and failing) I had to remind myself that he just wanted to be angry. He wanted to create a storm and wasn't interested in resolution.

Some people choose to be angry.

And that's not our fault.

Sometimes when it's all said and done, you've just got to offer them a refund and move on.

We see what we want to see, we hear what we want to hear.

Perception is an interesting thing.

Do you notice "perception" in your day?

Ever come across people who just need to be angry?

Any storms brewing out your way?

  1. Hi Leanne, people are different aren't they and you are right when you say they just need to be angry which I think is sad. However, your first sentence struck a chord with me 'we see the world not as it is but how we are'. I'm an optimist so I see the world mostly in a positive way rather which makes life so much more enjoyable. Have a beautiful day x

  2. I'm glad it's only 0.01% of all correspondence that you receive, and that you've addressed the situation and moved on. Keep smiling!

  3. I totally agree Leanne. Some people revel in drama, or sadness, or anger and can't seem to get out of that rut. Sometimes it's a sign of unhappiness in their lives. I see it for what it could be and let it be. Sunshine and positive spins don't always work with them but at least you know you've tried! :-) xo

  4. OMG you hit the nail on the head completely. Some people just want to be angry, they don't want you to appease them or help with their issue. They want someone to complain to or yell at. Which is kinda annoying.

  5. I had email discussion at work today that was similar - people hear what they want to hear. Which is sometimes quite frustrating.

  6. There's a saying that I often use for teenagers, who have an ability to twist up whatever you said into something completely different (It's from 2 Guns) 'if you're hearing it, it's only because you're hearing it, not 'cause I'm saying it.'. I think we bring a lot of baggage to the table in any interaction. I've had a few moments when I've misread cues and been ready to tear off someone's head, only to thankfully discover before I open their mouth that they're bringing up their own troubled past, not judging me...

  7. I think perception is everything - you've totally nailed it. The most important thing about perception is that we have the power to change it, but we have to want to do it.

  8. This is so true. We can choose our own stories and how we want to perceive any situation. Just because I see it one way - doesn't mean everyone esle will too.

  9. Well said, Leanne and I agree with Sammie above - perception is everything. I am trying to change my mind set from 'I have to' to 'I GET to'.

  10. Spot on here Leanne. Perception and expectation play such a big part in how people react to the same situation. That's why I write about my experiences and try to focus on the positives and the opportunities, not just on the issues and challenges. Although, some people do find it especially hard (if not impossible) to get out of a negative mindset, however hard you try...

  11. People, honestly some days we would be better off without them..right? We used to say about some, ahem, families in the schools where I worked, how much better life would be without them. So hard isn't it for some people to ever see another's view. You are a gem and volunteering your time to do so.
Thank you for linking up for #lifethisweek. Next week's optional prompt is Share Your Snaps. Denyse

  12. So true. Sometimes the key is realising that it's their issue and letting it go so they can deal with it. Not always that easy though!

  13. I was simply amazed at the architecture of this absolutely beautiful venue!! The environment at Chicago venues was unbelievable. I was fortunate enough to visit a place like this, we found awesome things one after another after another.

  14. What a great post Leanne. Some people really need an attitude adjustment!

I love hearing your thoughts! Keep them rolling in :)
