Day 3410 - The World Travel Expo

Where in the world would you go?

Last year my BIL and SIL took their family on an around the world trip stopping in Honkers, England and the USA.  They were always going to go to England for a holiday to see family, but after a visit to the World Travel Expo they found that the 'round the world ticket was actually cheaper than the standard UK fare and they got to visit new and exciting places along the way.

Given we're heading off to exotic places for my 50th birthday this year, and our T is touring Europe between uni semesters, we thought we'd better high tail it to the Expo to see if we could nab some similar bargains.

While I was there I was marvelling at the range of choice.  All the places to visit at really decent prices.

Of course the cheapest fares are always at non-peak periods and an expo like this is best suited to people who have some flexibility with dates.  Which got me to dreaming about the day we retire and it's just Derek and I with no time constraints.  We could attend an expo annually and simply say "where in the world are we going this year?"

How cool would that be!

Imagine wandering in and simply heading off into the yonder according to the best deal of the day.

I can't wait.

Where in the world would you go?

What's at the top of your travel list?

Have you ever booked a holiday through a travel expo?

As for the Expo this year, we secured our flights to the Caribbean where we'll be joining friends on a luxury yacht for 7 days (also spending time in LA, Miami, Pennsylvania and back to LA).  Plus we secured a flight in and out of the UK for T for her Top Deck tour of Europe.

Was it cheap?  Well, let's just say that battling the crowds and sitting with a travel agent for 2 hours as people lined up behind us was well worth the thousands we saved.

I would definitely do it again.

The Flight Centre Travel Group holds a number of free travel expos across Australia each year. To find out the nearest Travel Expo to you, click here.

  3. Good on you. This has given you much to plan and look forward to and I am glad. My travel wish is going solo premium economy to UK to visit where my dad's family came from and get a sense of my history. I "could" do this but at around $10K when all is added up, and me getting older along with my eating challenges (and we are STILL wanting enough to buy a house) it will be a pipe dream unfortunately.

    1. That sounds like a great wish. Especially the premium economy bit.

  4. I would very much love to travel to the UK and Europe one day before I die! My travel overseas thus far is limited - a trip to Singapore years ago to visit my sister who was living there, and a recent cruise that took us to Vanuatu and New Caledonia. That's it! I'll have to investigate if there are travel expo's in Brisbane! #TeamLovinLife

  5. Good on you for booking your flights and saving thousands. I'd like to make a RTW trip, stopping at places that I have family or friends or that I've been to and wanted to return, plus places that are new to me, like Australia :) #Lovin'LifeLinky

    1. They have one of these expos in Brisbane. Should check it out. They had flights to the UK for just over $1000 with Singapore Airlines which included an overnight stay in Singapore AND a day tour of Singapore all included. Incredible!

  7. There are some great priced flights at the moment for the UK. I'm going to visit Mum and we were looking at flights for just over $1000 - we can barely fly Perth to Sydney for that. What a wonderful idea though - a round the world shopping trip. Going to put that on my wish list for retirement travel.

  8. Oh I think I would get giddy at a travel expo, so many possibilities! We are heading to Europe in September for 10 weeks. We booked our flights and cars through Travel Associates but now we need to do the legwork on accommodation, which is fine because we find the planning is all part of the fun.

  9. I would love to go back to Australia. I loved it when I went to Melbourne and Williamstown years ago. I want to visit all the major cities. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
