Day 2430 - How a student assignment helped me refocus my business

Thanks Jess!

As you know I've been flailing of late.  Surviving not thriving.  Which is so unlike me.  I've always had such good focus, especially when it comes to projects and my business.

Poor Cheer Chick Charlie has been suffering over the last 12-18 months, cast to the side as we focused on more important things.  Real things that suck away our creativity.

I've done a lot of naval gazing when it comes to the Charlie brand, and when my distributor went into liquidation and my dream of international domination went with it, I started to second guess my goals.

I'd love to get back to that place where I was writing about stuff like OUT OF STOCK. I wouldn't even mind getting back to conquering the world one bookshop at a time.  More than anything I'd like to get back to signing books in books stores or meeting my fans face-to-face as they line up behind the security rope.

Recently my niece asked if she could interview me for one of her business assignments.  She's studying a Diploma of Business and wanted to use Cheer Chick Charlie as her case study.

She sent me a list of questions and it took me a few weeks to get around to doing it.  Why? Because of the aforementioned "surviving" thing plus there was a part of me that felt like a bit of a fraud given I've let my Charlie business lapse a bit of late.

Anyway, yesterday I finally got around to answering Jess' questions and low and behold, it got my businesses juices flowing.

As I talked about my business activities and answered her questions on which promotional strategies worked best, I started to look at my business with fresh eyes.  The exercise allowed me to get back to basics and asses where my strengths have been in the past.  To compare and analyse which suddenly gave me a strategy to move forward! As plain as the nose on my face, based on my Australian successes I think I've worked out how to get my books into the USA.

Which got me to thinking, how often are our stumbling blocks easily fixed by  a few targeted questions and a simple "strengths and weaknesses" assessment?

So for that I say "Thanks Jess!"

The dog didn't eat my homework.

The homework woke the dog and now we're running off into the sunset together.

This post is part of the Inspiration series I'll be rolling out over the next 18 months as I celebrate 50.

  1. Sometimes it takes someone else's focus on your work for you to see how good it really is. Glad you got a pep boost.
