Day 3623 - My Top 5 Tips for a Trip to Miami

The Five Ohhhh Birthday Festival continues ...

So here we are in Miami choosing to stay at Miami Beach to get the full holiday ambiance.  Having been here before we decided to prioritise quite a bit of time for some splat.

Choosing Loews as our accommodation (booked on line at a significantly discounted price) we had the perfect spot for splats-ville with a combination of poolside service and 4 chairs on the beach reserved especially for us.

Loews meant we were in walking distance of eateries, shopping, beach and the fabulously colourful Cuban architecture that Miami Beach is famous for.

My Top 5 must-dos in Miami include:

Taking an air boat ride through the Everglades:  We did ours at Fort Lauderdale on our way into Miami as we drove from Orlando to Miami Beach. Our choice was The Everglades Holiday Park run by the Gator Boys who are somewhat famous for their alligator antics on TV. But there are plenty of options to cruise the very peaceful and scenic highly recognisable Everglades.

Visiting the Versace Mansion for Lunch:  My daughter and I were obsessed with the "Assassination of Gianni Versace" Netflix docu-drama (morbid I know), plus of course we're a bit of a fan of his designs, so to see the house right there at 1116 Ocean Drive was a source of great excitement. Yes, we're shallow like that.  The only way to see the Versace Mansion is to eat there so we booked in for their $29 USD per person luncheon deal requesting the patio seating to overlook the pool.  An absolute highlight of our trip and one we'll remember for a long time to come. Not that I'm a photographer but I would imagine the tile work and architectural detail alone is a photographer's dream.  (Walking distance from hotel)

Visiting Wynwood Walls Art Precinct:  While we didn't actually get there this trip, this is still on my list of must-dos from our previous trip to Miami.  Incredible artwork using the industrial buildings as canvas continues to be one of my highlights of any trip ever.  See my previous blog post about that in 2016 here. (Uber ride required for around $20 USD)

Eating in one of the many Cuban restaurants:  Being this close to Cuba, Miami has a huge Cuban cultural influence which is what makes South Beach and Miami Beach so unique.  It is absolutely essential you eat Cuban when in Miami.  The Cuban's are known for their Cuban Sandwiches and also their chili style casseroles.  Big thumbs up all round from us. (Walking distance from hotel)

Shopping:  Want to go shopping? Of course you do.  The best pick would have to be the paved outdoor Lincoln Road Mall off 16th and 17th streets.  You'll find a combination of known stores (Forever 21 and Victoria's Secret) along with many boutiques with designer labels that you won't find anywhere else.  Watching our T try on clothes for her 20th birthday celebrations was a highlight!  We started by putting a $250 USD designer dress on hold and moved to a drastically reduced Guess pantsuit that we found in Macy's among their designer end-of-season sale items for a fraction of the cost. Insert wiping-of-brow-in-relief emoji here. (Walking distance from hotel)

So if you're planning to go to Miami, make sure you pick a gorgeous hotel along Miami Beach so that you can get a good combination of splat while being within walking distance of the culture that is uniquely South Florida.

Have you been to Miami?
