Braidwood, NSW

Let's go shopping!

V&M Showroom
12 Park Lane
Braidwood

Because you follow me on Instagram (of course you do ... and if you don't ... then @deepfriedfruit) you know that the Hubster and I recently snuck away for a quick overnighter to the coast.

Instead of racing down there for the sake of our destination, we decided to make the weekend just as much about the journey.

From Canberra we stopped for a cuppa at Bungendore, a stroll over the rocks at the Shoalhaven River and a spot of shopping at Braidwood.

When we bought our new home I made a decision that I wanted to fill it with trinkets and artwork that depict who we are as a family. Bits and pieces showcasing our many travels, whether that be from far off places like the Caribbean, from blink-and-you'll-miss-it country towns or from our coastal retreat. I want to create a trail within our house that not only shows where we've been, but to also give back to the communities of which we visit.

Much like the coast, Braidwood has had a difficult 8 months with the bushfires and now Covid.  It relies very heavily on folk like us who use it as a half way point for a toilet stop and a sausage roll on our way to our beach holiday.

The first lot of bushfires hit the Braidwood region in November last year and didn't let up until well into 2020.  Roads were cut, properties burned and lives were in danger.  Braidwood  not only suffered very real trauma emotionally and physically, but also missed out on their annual summer income injection as Canberrans had to postpone their annual coastal sojourn.

It is for that reason that many of us, in support of and appreciation for our regional neighbours, are now taking the time to really stop and take in all that Braidwood has to offer.

Come with me now as I take you on a shopping trip through this gorgeous little Aussie town.

Altenburg & Co

Altenburg & Co
Gallery and Shop
104 Wallace Street
Braidwood
Altenburg & Co is a delightful art gallery and gift shop situated in the middle of Braidwood's main street.  Founded in 1978 and housed in a heritage listed building, Altenburg is a collaboration of art, design and community with specialty gifts and artwork created by Braidwood locals.

It truly is a treasure trove of the most unique specialty items from clothing, to homewares, to jewellery, to art. Including our newest art piece which is now hanging in our home, delivered and hung by the artist herself!  More about that on my blog next week.

Sandalwood Homewares

Sandalwood Homewares
134 Wallace Street
Braidwood
Sandalwood Homewares is a home decorators delight with furniture, textiles, soft furnishings, jewellery, kitchenware and as many trinkets as you can carry at very affordable prices.

Situated in the main street, I bought a number of pieces to complement our new furniture and the styling in our dining area.  Pieces that give a little insight as to who we are as a family. You can read more about that in a couple of weeks when I share "pieces of me".

V&M Showroom

V&M Showroom
12 Park Lane
Braidwood
Honestly, I would never have found this gem had we not stopped and taken the time to chat to the locals.  Situated in a lane off the main street, Destination Vetro e Metallo (V&M) is a treasure trove of very unique jewellery, gifts, clothing and soft furnishings based in a 1950s woolstore & garage.  This fabulous old industrial building has been renovated to celebrate a destination for people who appreciate handmade goods and an upcycled ethos.

Owned by the jeweller herself, V&M is one of those spots that requires a revisit.  We walked in full of wonder and awe at what was on offer, walking out knowing we'd be back again to explore more deeply for a unique gift for that special someone.

Had it not been for the very conscious decision to really STOP in Braidwood and drop a few dollars in gratitude for allowing us to trundle through multiple times a year, I would never have discovered just how much our country neighbour has to offer.

It truly is delightful!

What little gems have you found in your region lately?

How often do you really STOP to take in the surroundings?

Who's looking forward to seeing my new artwork next week?

  8. Oh I do love interesting little shops on road trips. I'll look out for some of those next time we're passing through. I must say, I've stopped for coffees, browsing and even lollies in Braidwood, but I've never stopped for a wee. Just followed you on Insta as suggested - would love a follow back.
