The selfies

 What was I thinking?

Selfie 01
What was I thinking:
Is this lipstick too pink?
How cold is it out there?
Did I bring enough clothes for the soccer?
Shit, I hope my big coat is in the boot of the car
The "Oh my God" lines on my forehead are getting deeper. Then stop being so overtly surprised all the time!

I have been writing all week. ALL week.  Not for my blog unfortunately, nor for my children book series, but for both my day job and volunteer role. Which means I've kind of run out of words and (more importantly) writer's mojo.  Which means for this Lovin' Life Thursday, I've turned to my camera roll to see what inspiration I can find.

Instead I found a bunch of selfies which had me wondering "what was I thinking?"

Now, I'm not saying that in a "what the hell were you wearing?" or "what's up with that hairstyle" or "did you really believe the world wanted to see that much cleavage" kind of way.

I am actually wondering "what was I thinking" as in, what was going through my mind on the day this picture was taken.

Selfie 02
What was I thinking:
Is that grey starting to appear in my part line again?
Should I go and spray my hair with the touch up dye?
You're very brown today Leanne
Well done on getting all that shit done on your to-do list. Champion.
Let's try this airbrush filter on the "Oh my God" lines and see if we can iron them out. Bingo!

Before I share more of my selfie stash, let me start by sharing my self contemplation on why I actually take selfies.

Honestly, these days, I often take them as a pre-curser to the voice messages I send my bestie in Pennsylvania.  Because we are on opposite sides of the world (which means we're at opposite ends of the clock) rather than make a phone call we send voice messages through Messenger for the other person to listen to when they wake up. Our daily catch up on each others life. The occasional selfie helps to put a face to the voice.

I also take selfies to capture a moment.  To remind me of where I was and what I was doing on that day.  Or I take them to check my make-up.  Or I take them simply to capture a mood which then leads me down a path of self awareness and naval gazing.

Selfie 03
What was I thinking:
Does pink go with red hair?
I feel like Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink in this outfit
Hello world! I'm ready for you.
That filter is doing wonders for my forehead.  Who needs botox when you have filters?!
I think I may have overdone it on the filter.  I look fake.
Note to self: Delete filter app. It's over the top.

I've been taking selfies long before we had fancy cameras on phones. I'm that 80s chick that would capture a moment with a friend by turning the camera around and hoping we'd be in frame once the film was developed.

I'm also that girl that used to travel alone so would stand on the edge of (say) the Grand Canyon and point the camera at myself with the canyon behind me. Yes, I could well have been in the papers for falling off a cliff all for the sake of a good selfie, much like girls falling of balconies today.

Selfie 04
What was I thinking:
I'm loving myself stupid in these new glasses
I hope the food is good here
Should I order champagne? It's only lunch time. Perhaps not.
Oh bugger it, you only live once, order the champagne.
There are those wrinkles again.  Kind of wish I hadn't deleted that app.
Live with it Leanne! It's who you are.
Besides, there's always botox.
How much is botox?

Taking a selfie (and posting it on social media) used to be regarded as a sign of narcissism but that school of thought has been surpassed by the thought that people use it as more of a self awareness and self care tool. Despite the banter above about filters and botox, from where I sit, a selfie not only puts a face to my words, but it also helps me preserve my sense of self.  I use it as a tool to understand who I am and how I look to others. It is quite simply, the new mirror.

Perhaps the ultimate mirror or peek inside who I am and what I'm thinking today is the shot taken right now.  As I type this at my dining table in my dressing gown sans make-up, hair not brushed, smudged glasses and the filter gone from my phone.

Selfie 05
What was I thinking:
Eek!
Don't share that.
I'm glad I got my eye lash extensions redone. At least my eyes don't look bald.
You're doing OK Leanne for someone who's Deep Fried.
Love the skin you're in.
Forget botox.  Forget filters.  Just be true to you.
Now sign off this blog post because it's 7.26am and the Lovin Life Linky goes live at 7.30am

Do you use the selfie as a self awareness tool?

Do you ever look back and wonder "what was I thinking"?

Anybody else been zapped of their writing energy?

What are you lovin' about life this week?

Despite my lack of energy I'm off to seize the day before it seizes me. Time to spend my Thursday Lovin' Life!  Because despite what's going on in the world, there's always something to be grateful for.

Happy Thursday!

  1. I'm not a big fan of the selfie...but Ivan Coyote raised a point in their new book that if someone felt ugly or less than all their life, a selfie was a way for them to control the image and change the beauty standard (or something along those lines - I've can't be bothered to run downstairs and get the book to quote.) So I like that idea. We really need to change the beauty standard that was previously forced on us by magazines and ad men....

  3. I'm not a big fan of the selfie, but will take one if I'm away somewhere & want to record that I was there. I'm told that I need to do more of them - for my brand - but yeah... Having said that, that filter...I need that filter.

  4. Leanne, You're clearly an experienced selfie taker. I rarely take selfies. I like to take photos of places and things.

  5. Selfies are my friend now. From the time of my oral cancer diagnosis I have taken them. When it's your face, your smile, your personality, your hair...I want(ed) to preserve where I was and how I went. I took very few selfies before then. Now my selfies are about health, getting back into life, telling it as it is. I do critique myself sometimes but nowhere near as much as 'your convos!!'. If we do not take photos of ourselves but only of others and things, place etc then there will be no record for those who come after us. Worth thinking about! Denyse x

  6. I rarely take selfies and if I do, it's to be silly and send to the kids to show them how bad I am at it. Do it sometimes in groups or for a bit of a lark, but there's an entire world out there I'd rather photograph. Not averse to having my photo taken, but I'll leave that to others - and to be honest, selfies aren't usually too flattering. Or perhaps I haven't practised enough?

  7. I actually used to take more selfies with my camera when I had to turn it around to be included in photos. Funny enough, I think they came out better too! I have been trying to take more selfies so I'll get better at it.

  8. I hate selfies, I used to say I have a face made for radio and a voice made for mime. Looking very nice, you take nice selfies. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
