The Sup Nod

 Sup?

Not much. Sup with you?

Actually, I lie ... there's heaps going on in my world, but given "Sup" is a rhetorical question I'm not about to list every single task on my to-do list.  Trust me, just reading it will exhaust you.

Sup, or "what's up" is a well recognised colloquial term used as a greeting, similar to "how are you?" or "what's new?" Interestingly the term "what's up" was apparently first heard back in the 1940s when Bugs Bunny made it famous with "What's up Doc?"

Sup has been used a lot in our house in recent years.  I mean, we've always had it in our vocab I suppose (hell, the extended version has been around for 80 years), but usually in my husband's basketball circles.

Sup is often verbalised with a slight flicking of the head upwards.  The type of facial expression and head movement that shows you're asking a question.  That flicking of the head now has a name.  According to Urban Dictionary it's called the Sup Nod.

The Sup Nod is the sudden  up-down movement you make with your head when you see someone and wish to greet them, as if to say "Sup."

With a sixteen year old sports lad in the the house who is way too cool for school, the sup nod has become a standard greeting.  Long gone are the days when I have a child running into the house screaming "Mummy, Mummy, guess what happened at school today". Instead I get the flick of the head paired with a set of blue smiling eyes which, believe it or not, depicts a genuine interest in my day.  The sup nod is enough to start the conversation, just as the excited "Mummy, Mummy" greeting did a decade ago.

So today, I just wanted to say Sup? (paired with the sup nod) just to check in and see how everyone is doing.  With the Autumn Equinox just hitting the Northern Hemisphere, and therefore the Spring Equinox marking the "actual" start of spring here in the land down under, I'm sure there's a whole lot going on in people's worlds.

My world is full of celebration right now with the in-laws having celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary at a cocktail celebration we hosted last weekend, and my daughter turning  21 tomorrow with her party to host on Saturday. Then of course it's the end of the soccer season with a first grade Grand Final on Saturday (yes, during the party), the final game for my "Sup Son" on Sunday (yes, the day of my potential hangover) and our Gala Day the following weekend.  Then ... well ... we're hitting the road to find sunshine, blue skies and heat.  Combine that with Book Week coming up (author stuff) and the day job, and ... well ... remember that to-do list I mentioned?

Anyway, enough about me.  I really want to hear from you.

Sup?

  4. Apologies! I linked two posts, before I realized your directions specifically stated one. Please delete one. As far as ‘sup, you’ve got quite the list of awesome celebrations. Here (Las Vegas, Nevada, USA), as our hot summer finally is showing signs of Fall, we have been enjoying walks and patio dining.

  5. You have a lot on, and yes I'm familiar with the sup nod. A diamond wedding celebration is so special and all the best for your daughter's 21st. I can't believe that it was over 4 years ago now that we had my daughter's 21st!

  7. How lovely that you have so much to look forward to in the days ahead. I think you sound like your world is evening out again and the smiles are returning. Things in my world are good too - calmer and slower than yours....and that's pretty perfect for how I want to be living atm.

  10. With three teenage boys I am quite familiar with the 'sup nod too. We have lots going on here as well as my youngest just became an official teen this week, I have a surgery next week, and we're navigating our first time in a public school in over 8 years with my middle son starting his freshman year of high school. It's been a busy month but oh so fun.
