The things I have on repeat

What do you return to over and over again?

"So no one told you life was gonna be this way
Your job's a joke, you're broke
Your love life's DOA
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month
Or even your year, but

I'll be there for you"

I have Friends on repeat in my house and as a family we watch it over and over and over again. Why? Because it's there for us.

It's one of those shows that has stood the test of time and has become a trusted friend. Not just to those of us who remember it when it was first released (back when we had to wait an entire week before the next episode and an entire six months on an end-of-season cliffhanger) but to a whole new fan base of Gen Z-ers who were born well after the series first aired.

As we ate our dinner on our laps last night (sorry dining table) laughing at an episode of Friends I've probably seen twenty times, it got me wondering about how many other things I have on repeat in my life.

What do I turn to when I need comfort, familiarity and simplicity?

TV Shows

  • Friends (obvs)
  • Everybody Loves Raymond
  • Seinfeld
  • Beverly Hills 90210 (the original)

Music

  • INXS
  • Queen
  • Prince

Movies

  • Pretty in Pink
  • Sixteen Candles
  • Notting Hill
  • Pretty Woman

Holiday destinations

  • Hawaii
  • Vegas
  • Noosa
  • Disney
  • PA

Authors

  • Marian Keyes
  • Liane Moriarty
  • Janet Evanovich

Like a trusted and well worn pair of old slippers, these are my go-tos. These are the things that sing:

"I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)"

What do you return to over and over again?

Are there things in your life you have on repeat?

It's Thursday which means it's Lovin Life day. The day we remind ourselves there's always something to love about life and be grateful for. I'm grateful for the things I have on repeat.

  1. Familiarity can be soothing. I listen to a lot of music I grew up with which is so ingrained in my brain. Queen is one of those (the really early stuff), Carly Simon, Lobo, even Marcia Hines - music I cut my teeth on.

  2. It was only yesterday that I had a discussion wth someone & confessed that I've never watched a full episode of Friends, Seinfeld or The Simpsons. Add Everybody Loves Raymond to that list. For me it's Midsomer Murders, The Vicar of Dibley and Lewis.

  3. I too love some comfort shows and music. I loved Friends back then...not sure I could now as much but I love that it helps you all remain connected in those memories. For us, it was MASH. Every night when our kids were young. Now, for me, comfort changes a bit and I keep my DVDs of Downton Abbey ready for such needs. Soon I think, they will get around their 6th or 7th viewing.

  4. Hi Leanne - I'll always pick a Nora Roberts novel when I need something to read - some I think I've read two or three times (but I forget the plots so they're always new!) I also love the movie - Ferris Bueller's Day Off for some weird and obscure reason. So if I need a laugh I can be guaranteed one when I watch it - my family just roll their eyes over that one!

  5. We have lots of the same movies and authors in common! I do have lots of movies and TV shows I watch over and over again.

  6. I am not a big fan of Friends. I usually have stuff from the NFL Network on repeat. I do have "Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles" on repeat though.

For movies, I have too many to name and for music any alternative or new wave from 80's is always on repeat.
